Former champ Brian Stann retires from cagefighting

UFC middleweight Brian Stann, the former World Extreme Cagefighting light heavyweight champion, announced his retirement as a fighter on “The MMA Hour” radio show on Thursday.

He went 6-5 in the UFC and 12-6 in his MMA career. Stann dropped three of his last four fights, including a second-round knockout loss to Wanderlei Silva in March.

Stann, 32, has been a studio analyst on Fox network broadcasts of UFC events and will continue in that role. He will also expand his television presence as a color commentator on Fox Sports South ACC football broadcasts.

Stann was a linebacker at Navy before serving in the Marines, where he won a Silver Star for valor on the battlefield in Iraq.

He is also the president of Hire Heroes, a non-profit that seeks to help returning soldiers find civilian jobs.

■ MITRIONE OUT — Heavyweight Matt Mitrione suffered an injury in training and has had to pull out of a scheduled UFC on Fox 8 matchup with Brendan Schaub on July 27 in Seattle.

Schaub has been removed from the card and no replacement opponent will be sought.
