Edgar dominates Faber from start for UFC victory in Philippines

Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar won all five rounds over Urijah Faber on his way to a unanimous decision Saturday in the main event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s first card in the Philippines.

Edgar controlled the pace and distance of the fight, which was contested at featherweight, with his speed and constant movement. He took down Faber several times, but Faber almost immediately got back to his feet each time.

Faber was the longtime featherweight champion in World Extreme Cagefighting. He has been competing at bantamweight in the UFC, but came up a division to fight Edgar. It was the first loss in a nontitle fight of his career.

Also on the card in Manila, middleweights Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi won unanimous decisions.

Munoz, who had said he would retire after the fight, landed several big overhand rights on Luke Barnatt on his way to the victory.

“I feel so good,” Munoz said after leaving his gloves in the center of the cage. “To love what you do and do what you love, it doesn’t feel like work, and that’s fighting for me. But family is always the priority. I’m going out on my own terms. I don’t want to miss any more special moments with them. I’ve had an amazing career. The UFC has given me so much, and I’m very fortunate. I left the octagon, but I’m leaving the legacy of treating people the way I want to be treated.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better ending.”

Mousasi cruised past Costas Philippou.
