Live MNF blog from Australian newspaper is ‘top stuff’

Australian Jarryd Hayne is a former pro rugby player who made his NFL debut Monday night as a punt returner and running back for the San Francisco 49ers.

The “Hayne Plane and/or Train,” as he’s known Down Under, had an uneven debut, fumbling away his first career touch on a punt return before finishing with four carries for 13 yards and one catch for seven yards. Perhaps the best part of his debut was a live blog from an Australian newspaper written by a bloke named Matt Cleary, who called Hayne the “rugby playing kangaroo man.”

An NFL novice who has only watched the Super Bowl, Cleary recounted the action in hilarious fashion, describing 49ers coach Jim Tomsula as someone who “looks like he’s eaten an onion sandwich,” “looks like someone’s set his car on fire” and “paces the line like he’s a bear in a cage and doesn’t like it.”

Cleary also was enamored with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s “fine and shiny bald head.”

Cleary especially liked the kickers, writing that Minnesota’s Blair Walsh is “like a little Hobbit! A tiny little man! He’s a jockey! Ha. Top stuff, Walshy.” He sounded envious of the 49ers’ Phil Dawson, writing after a field goal, “Ha. Good luck to him. Forty years old, booting the pill between two big sticks for pretty good coin, better than working.”

The Aussie also was incredulous at all the breaks in the action: “Another break? Fair few breaks. Not exactly the Helsinki marathon in terms of aerobic exercise. But my it’s fast and physical.”

Some other musings included, “The Niners D-people celebrate like they’ve invented penicillin!”; “(Colin) Kaepernick dropped the hut-hut ball, I think”; “Teddy Bridgewater getting some instructions: ‘Throw a touchdown pass, you fool!'”; and “It was Hayne! He’s on a special team now, the running-a-few-yards and crash-into-the-other-mob team.”

Good on ya, Cleary. Top stuff.
