Former BALCO doctor has license suspended

The former medical director of the clinic involved in the BALCO doping scandal has been suspended from practicing medicine in California after investigators found he prescribed a stimulant to a sprinter — believed to be world champion Kelli White — without examining her.

Dr. Brian Halevie-Goldman, a psychiatrist who was medical director for the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative that provided steroids to top athletes, was suspended for 90 days by the state medical board.

The medical board’s accusation said the athlete, identified only as K.W., tested positive for modafinil at an international track meet in August 2003 and accepted a two-year suspension for admitting to its use in 2004.

Kelli White, a BALCO client who tested positive for modafinil after winning gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter races at the world championships in Paris in August 2003, was stripped of those medals and suspended for two years after admitting in 2004 to using the banned stimulant.

Also: Two owners of a Florida business that prospected for steroid customers on the Internet, producing about $5 million in annual revenue, pleaded guilty to drug charges in a New York court.

Greg Trotta, 38, and Brian Schafler, 34, both of Delray Beach, Fla., agreed to testify against others in the multistate investigation by Albany County prosecutors in return for sentences of five years’ probation.

Each pleaded guilty to felony third-degree diversion of prescription medications and prescriptions, admitting they helped get drugs in 2006 for customers in upstate New York who had no medical need for them.

UNLV’s Gantcheva nets MWC co-Player of Year

UNLV women’s tennis player Elena Gantcheva was named the Mountain West Conference co-Player of the Year, sharing the honor with Brigham Young’s Anastasia Surkova.

Gantcheva, ranked 66th in singles, went 18-7 in the regular season. She also teamed with Kristina Nedeltcheva to go 21-2 in doubles, earning a No. 20 ranking.

Nedeltcheva (20-8) also made the All-MWC singles team, and she and Gantcheva made the all-conference doubles team as well.

Fellow Rebels Elliot Wronski and Brett Hunter were named to the All-MWC men’s team, with Wronski making it in singles and joining Hunter in doubles.

Both teams compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships this week at Air Force Academy, Colo.

BCS officials decide to stick with format

BCS officials concluded three days of meetings in New Orleans with no major changes being made to the system used to crown a college football champion.

The commissioners from the 11 major conferences and Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White discussed a wide range of Bowl Championship Series issues, including the standings and automatic qualification standards, and decided to stand pat, said Southeastern Conference spokesman Charles Bloom.

Also: Charm the Giant rallied to beat Sohgol by 1 1/2 lengths in the $111,500 Wilshire Handicap, highlighting opening day at Hollywood Park’s 68th spring/summer meeting in Inglewood, Calif.

Rutgers women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer signed a seven-year contract extension after leading the team to the NCAA championship game.
