UNLV tennis players set for NCAA tourney

UNLV will have three participants in the NCAA tennis individual championships, with Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva competing in women’s doubles and Elliot Wronski competing in men’s singles in Athens, Ga.

Gantcheva and Nedeltcheva, ranked 20th with a 23-3 record, will face the No. 3-ranked team of Whitney McCray and Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech on Thursday.

Wronski (19-12), ranked 60th, takes the court today against No. 56 Alex Schweizer of Auburn.

Also: Georgia claimed its fifth NCAA men’s tennis championship with a 4-0 victory over Illinois on Tuesday in Athens, Ga., finishing the season 32-0.

In the women’s final, Georgia Tech beat UCLA, 4-2.

Former Villanova basketball star Howard Porter was found severely beaten in a Minneapolis alley, and he remained hospitalized Tuesday.

Porter, 58, is now a probation officer for Ramsey County, Minn., but it was unclear whether the beating was connected to his job. Police said no one had been arrested and had no suspects.

Reserve forward Ryan Wright plans to transfer from UCLA to Oklahoma, Sooners coach Jeff Capel said.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 240-pound Wright played in 28 games last season for the Bruins.

Louisiana State backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was suspended from the team indefinitely after he was cited for trying to illegally enter a riverboat casino in Baton Rouge.

Wie takes exemption to John Deere Classic

Michelle Wie accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the John Deere Classic for the third straight year, continuing her effort to make the cut in a men’s event.

Wie, graduating from high school next week, has not made the cut in six starts on the PGA Tour. A year ago at the John Deere Classic, she opened with a 77 and withdrew in the middle of the second round with heat exhaustion.

The John Deere Classic will be played July 12-15 at TPC Deere Run in East Moline, Ill.

Annika Sorenstam will return to the LPGA Tour next week at a tournament she hosts in South Carolina, after a two-month break in which she lost her No. 1 world ranking to Lorena Ochoa.

Sorenstam, 36, has been recovering from a herniated disk in her back. Her rehabilitation has “progressed well” and she will play in the inaugural $2.6 million Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika, agent Mark Steinberg said in a news release.
