Women’s tennis team tops San Diego State

The UNLV women’s tennis team, ranked 60th, topped No. 56 San Diego State 5-2 in a Mountain West Conference match Sunday in San Diego.

The victory capped the regular season for the Rebels, who finished 17-6 overall, 6-2 in the conference.

UNLV won two of three doubles matches to take the first point, then won four of six in singles.

Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva, ranked 16th in doubles, continued their hot streak. The duo beat the Aztecs’ Alesya Vidov and Ester Cadua 8-2 to improve to 21-2.

Gantcheva then beat Vidov again at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-3. Also posting singles wins for the Rebels were Nikol Dimitrova (No. 3), Claire Smith (No. 5) and Alisa Razina (No. 6).

Also: The UNLV men’s golf team shot 3-under 285 in the final round of the Thunderbird Invitational, moving up one spot to finish sixth in the 16-team event in Tempe, Ariz.

The Rebels posted a 10-under 854 total. Oregon, which shot even-par 288, won at 20-under 844, with host Arizona State second at 847.

UNLV put two individuals in the top 10, with Seung-su Han (70) finishing eighth at 6-under 210, and Jarred Texter (72) tying for ninth at 211.

New Mexico’s Charlie Beljan (68) was medalist at 15-under 201.

Kelly Fangonilo hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to lift the UNLV softball team over Colorado State 5-3 in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Rebels (30-17, 6-1 Mountain West) trailed 3-1 after surrendering back-to-back solo homers from Julia Kloppe and Kim Klabough in the fifth.

But UNLV came back to tie it with two runs in the sixth. Rosa Ordaz put down a squeeze bunt to score Brittany Bolinger, and Kendall Fearn scored on a passed ball.

Brittany Bregante gave up a leadoff double to Ashley Munoz in the bottom of the ninth, then got the next three Rams out to end the game.

The UNLV men’s tennis team swept Air Force 7-0 in Fort Worth, Texas, to finish regular-season play.

The Rebels (10-13, 3-3 MWC) dropped only one set, winning all three doubles matches for one point, and all six singles matches.

Elliot Wronski (No. 1), Slavko Bijelica (No. 2), Wesley Burrows (No. 3), Brett Hunter (No. 4) and Luca Barlocchi (No. 6) all won in straight sets.

Chiefs lineman Shields announces retirement

Kansas City guard Will Shields is retiring after 14 NFL seasons, during which he made a record 12 Pro Bowl appearances and anchored one of the top offensive lines in the league.

The 35-year-old announced his decision on his Web site — www.willtosucceed.org — Sunday. He said the physical requirements of football had become more difficult with each passing day.

“The decision to hang up my cleats has not been an easy one to make for me, but one I knew I would eventually have to make,” Shields wrote. “Today, I am letting everyone know that I am putting away my pads.”

Shields, who made a team-record 224 starts, made his 12th Pro Bowl appearance last season to tie the record held by Minnesota guard Randall McDaniel.

Also: Las Vegan Hasani Roseby took second in the women’s 100-meter dash at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Roseby, who earlier this year won the U.S. indoor 60-meter title, clocked 11.25 seconds, just behind Carmelita Jeter’s 11.16.

Mubarak Shami of Qatar won the Paris Marathon in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 19 seconds. Defending champion Gashaw Melese of Ethiopia was second in 2:09:53
