Wranglers defeated in shootout at Stockton

Ryan O’Mara scored the decisive goal in the shootout, giving the Stockton Thunder a 3-2 victory over the Wranglers in the ECHL on Friday at Stockton, Calif.

The shootout was tied at 1 after goals by the Wranglers’ Shawn Limpright and the Thunder’s Brandon Schwartz before O’Mara’s winner.

Tyson Strachan (second period) and Ryan Donally (third) scored for Las Vegas (15-2-2), which led 2-1 before Stockton’s Andy Contois tied the game midway through the third.

The teams will play again at Stockton at 7:30 p.m. today.

Earlier, Wranglers defenseman Jason Jozsa was returned to the team by the American Hockey League’s Quad City Flames.

Also: Nashville Predators forward David Legwand signed a $27 million, six-year contract extension that will keep the franchise’s career scoring leader with the team through the 2014-15 season.

Legwand has franchise records with 304 points, 113 goals, 28 game-winning goals, 10 overtime points and 15-multiple goal games.

Ellis beats wind, rain, to claim Nevada Open

John Ellis struggled in the wind and rain but held off Cody Stover by one stroke to win the Nevada Open at The Palms Golf Club in Mesquite.

Ellis shot a 1-over-par 72, but his three-day total of 202 was good enough to defeat Stover, who closed with a 4-under 67 to finish with a three-day total of 203.

The win by Ellis was worth $12,000. Finishing third, one shot back, was Joe Ryon, who shot 4-over 75 after going into the final round tied with Ellis.

Also: Woody Austin and Mark Calcavecchia shot an 8-under 64 in modified alternate-shot play for a share of the first-round lead with Fred Funk and Jeff Sluman in the Merrill Lynch Shootout at Naples, Fla.

Tournament host Greg Norman and Bubba Watson were a stroke back, and defending champions Jerry Kelly and Rod Pampling opened with a 66.

South Africa’s Omar Sandys shot his second straight 4-under 68 to lead by two strokes after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Malelane, South Africa. He is at 8-under 136.

Englishman Lee Slattery had a 65, the day’s best round, and was two shots back at 138.

Local teen tennis star teams for doubles win

Henderson’s Asia Muhammad teamed with Kristy Frilling of Sidney, Ohio, to upset the top-seeded girls’ 18 doubles team in the quarterfinals of the Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships at Coral Gables, Fla.

The unseeded Muhammad-Frilling twosome defeated Madison Brengle of Dover, Del., and Nikola Hofmanova of Austria, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Also: Undefeated Canadian Joachim Alcine stopped Alfonso Mosquera at 2:17 of the 12th round to retain the WBA light middleweight title in Montreal.

Alcine (30-0) capped a close fight by knocking down Mosquera (19-6) with a right-left combination and taking him down again for an eight-count before forcing referee Mike Griffin to stop it.

The defense was Alcine’s first of the title he won July 7 from American Travis Simms at Bridgeport, Conn.

Florida State beat Notre Dame 3-2 and Southern California defeated crosstown rival UCLA 2-1 in the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament at College Station, Texas.

The Seminoles (18-5-3) and Trojans (19-3-2) will play for the national title Sunday.
