Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Oct. 31
October 30, 2013 - 8:49 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Pure Blush – Claimed by Craig Dollase two races ago; ran a creditable third in last, now slides down one class level.
3 Miz Wounded Knee – Dead late closer ran a race fast enough to upset these two back; hard to accept the short odds though.
Long Shot – 7 Psalm Sixteen
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
2 Frandontjudge – Clever maiden claiming win, now facing winners for the first time; always a big class rise doing that.
7 Susans Express – Ran flat in last after a sharp graduation two races back; if she repeats that race she’ll be double tough.
Long Shot – 6 Appearance
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $36,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds
8 Under Review – Starts the Pick 6 with a $439K carryover; hard heat where there there are no throw outs.
6 Square Dancer – Been away 5-months, but gets class relief for this; Joel Rosario returns with plenty of live BC mounts.
Long Shot – 1 Sinfully
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
4 Kristo – Has lost both starts as a 3/5 chalk in sprints; stretching out today, he’s bred to run a distance of ground.
2 Hold Everything – Martin Garcia for Rafael Bejarano who rides the chalk; Bob Baffert colt ran well in debut, can improve.
Long Shot – 5 Cautious Giant
Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $33,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Mr. Bossy Pants – His speed should be flattered by the turf rail out 30 feet; also like the parking lot post down the hill.
4 Hotradamus – Dead late closer won down the hill last time; Corey Nakatani is getting better mounts, winning more races.
Long Shot – 8 Koast
Race 6 – 1 mile, $70,000 Big Bear, 3-year-olds and up
3 Rousing Sermon – Potential single on some smaller Pick 6 tickets; 3-of-4 lifetime wins have been over Santa Anita dirt.
2 Summer Hit – Chance to be lone early speed; may get an early tip how the main track will play in front of the BC races.
Long Shot – 5 Soi Phet
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $51,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Chimi Dee – Her one race down the hill was a doozy second; ran like a short horse in last, should improve with the seasoning.
3 Oscillator – Dead late closer will need a fast early pace to do her best; Julien Leparoux knows how to close and win.
Long Shot – 5 Another Flashback
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 Sophie’s Secret – Luis Saez is a top rider, but has little SoCal experience; these races will give him a leg up.
11 Magic Number – A bit of a nibbler but takes the weight off with the 7-pound bugboy; needs to show some late energy.
Long Shot – 5 Glad’s Gals
Best Bet – 4 Kristo (race 4)
Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/6/$34.20; Long Shots, 8/1/$6.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.80
Santa Anita Totals – 336/86/$571.80; Long Shots, 161/23/$278.00; Best Bets, 19/9/$32.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #2 Bourbon Courage (9/5) in race 9 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
