Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Oct. 19

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

3 Sergeant O’Rourke – Peter Miller has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; your edge is seeing the tote action on the FTS.

2 Quick Approval – Was well bet in debut, even though it was a 6-horse field; we’ll give her another chance.

Long Shot – 1 Red Barris

Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up

8 Corinthian’s Song – Has had 11 chances, but 8 in the money finishes is a tease; like the cut back in distance.

1 Brave Act – Don’t like the inside when the rail is out 24 feet; has enough speed maybe to protect his position.

Long Shot – 6 Angel Charge

Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up

5 Private Bounty – Ran OK in last first out for Mike Mitchell; there isn’t much in here so a step improvement can win it.

4 Broadway Nika – Tepid chalk in this bottom of the barrel bunch; Iggy Puglisi won a nice race Friday for Paul Aguirre.

Long Shot – 7 Barney Rebel

Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $27,000, Starter allowance $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

4 Olympic Blue – Has a strong turf resume and at this one mile distance too; big class relief from the grade 2 Del Mar Derby.

5 Very Unusual – Speedy sort can take advantage of the turf rail out 24 feet; expect simple send tactics by Agapito Delgadillo.

Long Shot – 7 Tricky Shane

Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

1 Newfound Gold – For forgiving handicappers after his last race debacle; returns to dirt and second off a year hiatus.

5 McKenzies Way – Has settled into this modest class level; tactical speed to sit a decent trip and grind it out late.

Long Shot – 3 Sammy’s a Runnin’

Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

1 Field Report – What a tease with 8 seconds; Bill Spawr switches to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.

3 Cinco de Mario – Like the cut back in distance going down the hillside turf course; will be in arrears and make one brush.

Long Shot – 5 Red Man Run

Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $42,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds

9 Summer Exclusive – Proven to be a better runner on grass; tries the hill for the first time, like the parking lot post.

2 Derringer – Bounced in last after a nice race off the claim two back; forgiving handicappers may give him a pass.

Long Shot – 4 Great Friends Rule

Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), $100,000 California Flag Handicap, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

9 Strong Wind – This colt has ability but been a little unlucky; tries the hillside course for the first time.

5 Starspangled Heat – Barry Abrams barn has rebounded from Del Mar with 4 nice wins at the meet; Corey Nakatani has the mount.

Long Shot – 7 Ain’t No Other

Race 9 – 1 mile, Purse $30,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

9 She’s Flush – Expect P Val to send on the stretch out; first time going around 2-turns, will be forwardly placed.

6 Singleinthelast – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; looks like a horse begging for distance.

Long Shot – 10 Sweet Lips Pooh

Best Bet – 4 Olympic Blue (race 4)

Santa Anita Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 13/4/$21.80; Long Shots, 7/1/$8.80; Best Bet, 0/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals – 239/57/$397.20; Long Shots, 114/19/$236.80; Best Bets, 13/5/$19.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #8 Readtheprospectus (2/1) in race 11 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Mister Pippit won at Belmont Park paying $3.10 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats – 164/110/$906.30; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
