Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Feb. 20
February 19, 2014 - 9:46 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
6 Addendum – Ran awful in last, but her two prior races are fast enough to beat these; tactical speed to sit a decent trip.
5 Granny Calling – When a top jock like Rafael Bejarano rides for a small outfit, ask yourself why; watch the tote for clues.
Long Shot – 1 Ghost N Your Heart
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
7 Crushed It – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; first race ever on a dirt main track.
6 Patriot Vow – Another dropping from MSW to maiden claiming; didn’t show much in debut, but Mike Pupye barn is going good now.
Long Shot – 2 Warren’s Sallyized
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
4 Eltoninadress – Claimed by Bob Hess off a good third; he hires Joe Talamo to ride, tactical speed to lead or follow close up.
2 Best by Far – Rafael Bejarano rarely rides in these $8K bottom claimers; I guess he better get used to it in SoCal.
Long Shot – 7 Brown Is Beige
Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $58,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
7 Mangita – Bruce Headley just celebrated his 80th birthday; this would be a proper late gift to himself with a victory.
6 Warren’s Rosebud – Same strategy as a prior race, Rafael Bejarano riding for a small outfit; just ask yourself why.
Long Shot – 2 Quinnette
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
6 Acute – Mike Mitchell has started only 17 horses at this meet; in the old days, he used to start that many in a week.
2 Second Time – Winning favorite in last under Agapito Delgadillo; never have a problem betting him on a live horse.
Long Shot – 3 Bas
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Indygo F M A – When was the last time you saw Neil Drysdale claim a horse; key vote comes from Gary Stevens taking the call.
4 Feline Forum – Been away a full year; faced good company last year at Gulfstream, Vladimir Cerin has sat on him every since.
Long Shot – 7 Chilada
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up
5 San Onofre – Has been patiently handled to win thru his conditions; hasn’t been tested yet in 3 race win streak.
6 Heir of Storm – Peter Miller barn has been sizzling of late; this one gets class relief from the Strub for this.
Long Shot – 3 Explain
Race 8 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $35,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
10 Lamazone – John Sadler won some key 3-YO stakes with Candy Boy and Kobe’s Back; this filly is not nearly in the same class.
7 One More – Showed a nice new dimension when switched to turf in last; that race alone makes him a strong contender in here.
Long Shot – 3 Lust for Life
Best Bet – 5 San Onofre (race 7)
Santa Anita Park Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/6/$38.00; Long Shots, 9/1/$12.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
