OAK TREE AT SANTA ANITA
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 7 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds
Ididn’tdoanything – Logical chalk gets big class relief today from a pair of stakes to a claimer; best stride comes late.
Roosevelt – Sherman has an uncoupled entry in here, this is by far the longer priced horse; leap of faith behind Nakatani.
Long Shot – Cayambe
Race 2 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
June My Love – With the turf rail out 30 feet, we’ll go for the steal with a speedball; can be picked up by her stablemate.
Powerofvoodoo – Miserable effort last time as a badly beaten favorite; can rebound at a much better price this afternoon.
Long Shot – Gem Show
Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $31,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
Oceanus – Ran too bad to be true last time off the claim by Sherman; drops a notch in class and could wake up in here.
Island Launch – Speedy sort shortens up slightly in distance for Mitchell; like that Nakatani remains loyal to the cause.
Long Shot – Dr. Einstein
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Catch That Thief – Come from behind horses have to time their moves, or they run out of gas before the line; good fit here.
Shootist – Speedball will try to bottom out the field from wire to wire; third start off a 10-month hiatus can be his best.
Long Shot – Ready Say Go
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Left Unsaid – Frankel charge got a good education in debut when allowed to run on late; he’ll be a lot tighter for this.
Mr. Zarrow – Another with exceptional turf pedigree and from an under the radar barn; he could also improve in start two.
Long Shot – Guts
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, Purse $14,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
Smokin Forest – Sharp win at this class level at Fairplex, can be taken to repeat; note that Garcia takes over for Pedroza.
Zayed – Chased Smokin Forest and could see the same kind of trip today; parking lot post over Cushion track is not so bad.
Long Shot – Currency Trader
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $50,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Big Bertha – Dead late closer could see a promising fast pace scenario; like the turn back in distance for Canani barn.
Gothic Beauty – Ran a winning race for this level last time chasing a good horse in Coco Belle; wide rail aids her speed.
Long Shot – Udriga
Race 8 – 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Dances With Tigers – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; need not be much to beat these.
Seattle Avenue – May get ignored coming in off the also eligible list; dead late closer should be passing tired horses.
Long Shot – Terrajazz
Best Bet – Ididn’tdoanything (race 1)
Santa Anita Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/4/$25.20; Long Shots, 9/1/$11.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 272/58/$413.20; Long Shots, 138/14/$156.80; Best Bets, 16/4/$17.80
