TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1:20 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs (turf), $75,000 Robert Kerlan Memorial Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Bonfante – Chance for a minor upset with this dead late closer from the wide out; a speedy pace could be the right scenario.
Scottsbluff – Short priced chalk is strictly the one to beat; he’s proven he is grass worthy, has a nearly perfect sod record.
Long Shot – One Union
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Border Problem – Made an easily overlooked middle move in debut; like the rider switch to bugboy Talamo for the money shot.
Warren’s Player – Tepid favorite due to the fact that the second time out for Sise babies is deadly; need not be much to win.
Long Shot – Filled With Hope
Race 3 – 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Kissin Party – Leap of faith the Mitchell-Baze combo will have this race surrounded; been sliding down the claiming ladder.
Dixie Dixie Dixie – If my top two picks come to the wire, it’ll Baze and Talamo dueling; her race two back is fast enough.
Long Shot – Excessive Tale
Race 4 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Wise Mandate – Logical chalk debuted in a 2-furlong drag race last March; he ran well, and has been in mothballs ever since.
Gotham Devil – FTS by Gotham City is bred to be a pure sprinter and nothing else; need not be much to pull a big upset today.
Long Shot – Fantasy Free
Race 5 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $49,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Macadamia – Like the turn back in distance to this turf sprint; Talamo will lag far back early and make his patented late move.
Lady Matilda – Dead late closing sprinter from the Stein barn; Baze will be watching every move that Talamo makes behind him.
Long Shot – Ingrid the Gambler
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $24,000, Claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
Patriotic Flame – Claimed by Mitchell in return from a 18-month sabbatical; has back class and could see him moving forward.
Norway House – Razor sharp win last time for Mullins, now takes a small step up in class; tactical speed to sit a good trip.
Long Shot – Loving Type
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $33,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
Common Trust – Second start off a 13-month hiatus; ran evenly in return, more importantly his best races have come on turf.
The Five J’s – Anything Mullins touches lately seems to run his eyeballs out; was claimed by Las Vegas owner Dan Horowitz.
Long Shot – Jet Iron
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $49,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Tolnai – It’ll be interesting to watch this Argentine import in his U.S. debut; Sadler can certainly get them ready to run.
Enter Anon – Logical chalk is moving from a high to a low percentage barn for this test; a repeat of his last can win this.
Long Shot – Winning Tactics
Race 9 – 1 1/2 miles (turf), Sunset Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Fitz Flag – Been facing tougher in grade 1 and 2 stakes than some of these others; suspect will offer a ton of value too.
Stormin Away – Got up late in the Round Table in a sharp effort; whenever Mullins has put him in graded stakes, he’s faltered.
Long shot – Spring House
Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Kelly Carson – Sliding down the claming ladder for West to this career low level; she faces the easiest task of her career.
Devons Success – Speedball will try to steal this on the front end from a parking lot post; she too is dropping down in class.
Long Shot – High Speed Goldie
Race 11 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Kula Girl – Can the chalk win the last race of the Hollywood meet?; was given an dumb ride in last, Baze will be smarter.
Stop the Humor – She’s been sprinting on turf when her pedigree suggest 2-turns; been knocking at the door with these.
Long Shot – Minimite
Best Bet – Macadamia (race 5)
Hollywood Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/6/$35.60; Long Shots, 9/1/$16.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.40
Hollywood Totals – 1,028/246/$1,601.80; Long Shots, 503/71/$773.80; Best Bets, 61/27/$112.20
