HORSE RACING
September 5, 2007 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $42,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
Raise the Heat – If you’re not a Hollendorfer fan, you should be; was flattered in last when Megabyte won next time out.
Get Off the Sugar – Has been ambitiously placed in his last three starts; returns for a price tag where is he competitive.
Long Shot – Stylin Cat
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Genegenedancnmachn – Ward FTS are dangerous in MSW or maiden claiming races; been working fast, gets Pedroza for debut.
Richer Gear – This FTS is from the O’Neill barn; been working bullet fast and has win early pedigree, a lot to like here.
Long Shot – First Opportunity
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, $85,000 Pirate’s Bounty Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Fly Dorcego – Forget about his low winning Beyer in last, this is a nice horse; tactical speed to sit a trip and fire late.
Relato Del Gato – If the speed is holding up, this is the guy they’ll need to run down in the lane; note his Gold Cup win.
Long Shot – Double Action
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $30,000, 3-year-olds and up
Their He Goes – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to claiming; adding blinkers on and Gomez, down the lane.
Dart River – Ran well for Aguirre off the claim from Baffert; Baffert culls his barn at Del Mar, but some may have talent.
Long Shot – Midnighter
Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $46,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Denied – Taking a small, but significant, class drop in search of a win; tactical speed and Talamo to sit a stalking trip.
Switzerland – Was overlooked last time and will be overlooked again despitetop jockey Baze and winning; he’s won at a mile.
Long Shot – Gallardo
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Skimmetry – Could do worse than back a well-bred FTS from Frankel; don’t worry, you won’t see bullet on his worktab.
Kalookan Event – Headley barn has been in a proverbial heat wave the latter part of the meet; bullet works for the chalk.
Long Shot – Count Brahms
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, $85,000 CERF Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Sophie’s Trophy – Going bombs away in a jigsaw puzzle of a race; has run in stakes her whole career, Gomez and blinkers on.
Selvatica – Heavy chalk from the rail and for good reason; she’s a multiple stakes winner and is training well for Canani.
Long Shot – Sindy With an S
Race 8 – 7 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Placid Lake – Should have won last time but had a bothered trip at key moments; if Talamo gets her daylight, she’ll win.
Phoebe’s Song – The main foe to the chalk, she has tactical speed to avoid a trouble trip; has a big target on her back.
Long Shot – Incredible
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, $250,000 Del Mar Futurity, 2-year-olds
Drill Down – Key for me is Baze jumping off Salute the Sarge to ride this guy; sharp MSW win, steps into deep water today.
Salute the Sarge – Where’s the respect?, unbeaten colt loses his rider and is 6/1 odds; a gritty fighter in the trenches.
Long Shot – Whatever Whenever
Race 10 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $63,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
Patch of Blue – Big step up from MSW win to allowance foes; rallied from last to first to overcome a slow paced race.
Black Jack Attack – Speed horse could steal the verdict if left alone too long; most in here are grab and hold horses.
Long Shot – Soupy
Best Bet – Placid Lake (race 8)
Del Mar Monday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/3/$22.40; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals – 667/161/$1,180.20; Long Shots, 336/40/$501.80; Best Bets, 39/18/$79.40
