HORSE RACING
April 5, 2007 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
Nevada Worrier – Was well-meant in debut, but a difficult start took him out of contention; another chance from a parking lot post.
Yodeman – FTS from Kitchingman appears to have what it takes to win; Swiss Yodeler get are typically fast and precocious, a good combo.
Long Shot – Doublesweetact
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Excessive Tale – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; she’s run multiple races fast enough to beat these.
La Beau Em – Always like Chavez when it looks like he has a chance; showed enough speed where she should be able to sit a decent trip.
Long Shot – Bartok’s Bling
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds
Another Brother – Despite being favored, he was badly overmatched in the Borderland Derby at Sunland; this spot hits him between the eyes.
Gary John – My respect for Sherman grows with each SoCal winner he sends out; the guy is ready to move forward third start off the claim.
Long Shot – Bold Bengie
Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Cinder Cone – Sired by Unusual Heat who has thrown one good turf runner after another; stretching out for the first time for Zucker.
Star Nicholas – Tepid chalk is strictly the one to beat; like that the Mig remains loyal, but this could be a spread race in the pick 6.
Long Shot – Powerofvoodoo
Race 5 – 7 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
More Angels – She’s not big on winning, but is claimed by the very capable Spawr barn; well spotted here, like the turn back in distance.
Private Hall – Tepid chalk in a truly wide open affair; claimed by Knapp, she has proven to be competitive at this mid-class level.
Long Shot – Bit of Folly
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $50,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Buddy Tuddy Buck – O’Neill may have this small field surrounded by his uncoupled entry; this guy will sit in arrears and make one run.
Red State – Other half of the uncoupled O’Neill entry has a lot of early speed; his job will be to go to the front and show no mercy.
Long Shot – World Asunder
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Tiz Elemental – If she runs the race she did two back in the Sunshine Millions, the rest will be running for second; forget the turf try.
Smokin Danielle – Looked like something special when she won her NoCal career debut; second best in last, but she appears to have talent.
Long Shot – Swiss Blend
Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Candygram – Leap of faith that Sadler off the claim can move this filly forward; she ran fine in debut last year, showed nothing in last.
Ruthie’s Girl – Another leap of faith, this on Espinoza knowing what he’s doing in this bottom level race; need not be much to win.
Long Shot – Supersur
Best Bet – Another Brother (race 3)
Santa Anita Wednesday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$21.80; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.00
Santa Anita Totals – 1,181/314/$2,083.20; Long Shots, 591/67/$916.00; Best Bets, 68/28/$116.40
