TODAY AT SANTA ANITA
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Unspoken Fur – Hard to go wrong with a Frankel baby in an open event; switching from turf to dirt, she could easily improve.
Sweet August Moon – Tepid chalk in a race full of question marks; she debuted in a Grade 1 stakes, gets major class relief.
Long Shot – Royal Humor
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Run Right Thru – May be the best pace scenario in all of horse racing, lone early speed; simple tactics of leave and go fast.
Kissin Party – Dead late closer ran OK in first race off the claim for West; she could use some help softening up the chalk.
Long Shot – Missing Treasure
Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
My Manhattan – Eastern invader making her SoCal debut, and over Cushion track; she has tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
Suisse Movement – She is a dead late closer sprinting, but can sit closer to the pace going 2-turns; has some back class.
Long Shot – La Mandonna
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $43,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Elinvar – FTS from Shirreffs has the pedigree to be any kind of animal; she’s 8/1 morning line, watch the tote for action.
Hilogold – She’s had three good chances and has burned up our money; figures to be another short price today, it’s your move.
Long Shot – South African Baby
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds
Conclave – Ran a winning race for this class level in last; has the back class where a repeat is well within his realm.
Longhorn – Monteleone off the claim has been a surefire profit in recent weeks; value play as this guy’s form really stinks.
Long Shot – Thunder One
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Two Tone Roan – Been away 2-months since a Del Mar sprint; stretching out for the first time, he could show more speed.
Tribal Chief – Ran together late with Two Tone Roan down at Del Mar; Sadler charge has a right to improve also in this heat.
Long Shot – The Ivan Show
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $47,000, Optional claiming $47,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Ballestero – Hines has an uncoupled entry in here, so eyeball Iron Duke too; showed a lot of moxie in Del Mar turf routes.
Lil Mitch – Dead late closer should see a perfect ground saving trip from the wood; capable of outrunning his high odds.
Long Shot – Master Heat
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Larue – Getting long in the tooth, but recent starts for a price tag have been better; like getting Koriner at fair odds.
Magic Label – Tepid chalk in a wide open finale; she’s run for this low price tag before in NoCal, but without winning.
Long Shot – Downtown Lover
Best Bet – Run Right Thru (race 2)
Santa Anita Thursday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$17.20; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 219/46/$322.60; Long Shots, 111/13/$145.60; Best Bets, 13/3/$14.80
