As previously reported, Hope Solo was suspended last week for six months and her contract terminated by the U.S. Soccer Federation. The moment Solo learned of her suspension was caught on camera for the Fullscreen series “Keeping Score.”
A tearful Solo tells the camera, “Six months suspension. No pay. Terminated contract. Effective immediately.”
“Terminated contract,” she repeats while tearfully hugging husband Jerramy Stevens. “Not just a suspension.” She’s later heard screaming off camera, “17 f-king years, and it’s over” — referring to her tenure on the national team.
The decision was made after the U.S. women’s goaltender called Team Sweden “a bunch of cowards” after losing to them in the Rio Olympics quarterfinals.
National women’s team player representative Rich Nichols argued Solo was being held to a double standard. “She was fired for making comments that no man would have been fired for making,” Nicols told USA Today. “It’s a draconian penalty.” Nichols vowed to appeal the suspension.
“Keeping Score” not only chronicles Solo’s Olympic experience, but also her fight for pay equity between male and female soccer players.
An extended trailer from the series shows Solo’s battles on and off the field.
Solo is a three-time Olympian, leading the team to gold medals in 2008 and 2012.
Solo has also decided to end her season with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League, announcing her departure from her professional club team in a statement Tuesday.
