If you were looking for a hole that could short-circuit a player’s round Thursday, this was it. The elevated tee box with the small green and the pin tucked away in the left corner near the water on the left side didn’t give the golfers much to shoot at. It yielded just 18 birdies while causing 21 bogeys, four double-bogeys and two triple-bogeys. There were no eagles, and 93 pars.
One of those bogeys was by Mark Hubbard, who had a one-shot lead until he took a 4 at 17 to drop into a tie for the top spot.
“It was one of those holes where you weren’t sure if the green was hard or soft,” said Chad Campbell, who also took a bogey. “But it didn’t matter, because I missed the green when I hit it into the bunker.”
Rickie Fowler, who took a double-bogey at 17, said: “It can be visually intimidating. It’s a tough hole out there. You can’t hit it left where the water is, and I hit it left.”
