Kevin Penner had just missed his birdie putt on his final hole at Southern Highlands on Saturday. As he walked off the green, he tossed his ball into the water that buttressed the par-5 No. 9.
Things were going relatively well for the UNLV men’s golf team in Friday’s first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
He had just left the 18th green at Southern Highlands Golf Club with a 3-under-par 69. As Blake Biddle joined his teammates, he was hoping he had done enough to help UNLV win its home tournament.
In any other sport it wouldn’t be an issue.
As his team left the course at Turtle Bay Resort on Friday, UNLV men’s golf coach Dwaine Knight knew where the Rebels stood in terms of the big picture — a serious contender for the NCAA championship.
