Monteiro wins first Southern Nevada Amateur Championship

Cristina Monteiro of Canyon Gate Country Club shot even par for two days at Bear’s Best Golf Club to win last month’s Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association Amateur Championship. It took a three-hole playoff for Laurie Johnson, also of Canyon Gate, to win the overall net championship.

Silver Cup qualifying also took place at the same time. The Silver Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition matching women golfers from Northern Nevada against those from Southern Nevada, will be played Oct. 24-27 at the Primm Valley Golf Club’s Lakes course.

Representing Southern Nevada will be Masako Brown, Sarah Bowman, Diana Chapman, Susan Daum, Sandy Day, Doe Emes, Diana Hamilton, Clara Heo, Johnson, Rae Ann Kicker, Lynn King, Brenda Knott, Nao Mizuno, Monteiro, Deborah Rees, Robbin Sanchez, Vilma Saucedo, Penny Schilling, Laura Smith and Janet Weber.

Jon Taruc, Michael Wynn win Cleveland Golf Pro-Scratch

The team of professional Jon Taruc and amateur Michael Wynn took top honors in the 2010 Cleveland Golf Pro-Scratch, posting two rounds of 63 to edge out Jake Ellison and John Busby by a stroke. The tournament was held July 11-12 at Angel Park Golf Club.

The Cleveland Golf Pro-Scratch is a two-person better ball with each team comprised of one professional and one "scratch" amateur competing for a total prize purse of more than $17,000. The event sponsor is Cleveland Golf Srixon.

Local qualifying for event takes place Sept. 18

Local qualifying for the 2010 United States Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship will be held at Paiute Golf Resort on Sept. 18. Qualifiers must have a USGA Handicap Index of 7.4 or lower and must be 55 years old on or before Oct. 2. Apply online at www.usga.org/champs/apply prior to Aug. 18. The Senior Amateur Championship will be held at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 2-10.
