Former Rebel Birch signs as free agent with Wizards

Khem Birch was not picked Thursday in the NBA Draft, but the former UNLV forward picked his spot less than 24 hours later. He is signing as a free agent with the Washington Wizards.

“Khem has a great chance of making their roster,” said Mike George, Birch’s agent.

Birch plans to play in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas from July 11 to 21. One of his Wizards teammates will be former UNR point guard Deonte Burton, who also went undrafted.

The 6-foot-9-inch Birch, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West, averaged 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds last season as a junior.

Roscoe Smith, another undrafted junior forward from UNLV, agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I don’t think Roscoe expected to get drafted, but he hoped maybe one team would pull the trigger,” said Mike Higgins, Smith’s agent. “It’s an opportunity to play in summer league, and you’ve got to go in and play well. It’s obviously the tough route.”

Mike Moser, a former Rebels forward who transferred to Oregon for his senior season, will sign as an undrafted free agent with the Boston Celtics.
