Here’s a look at what happened during Week 4 of the high school football season.
What we learned
1. We’ve all seen games get chippy and teenagers lose control. But what happened at the end of the Canyon Springs-Basic game on Friday was enough to turn your stomach.
The game had numerous personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, and things finally boiled over just as the game ended in a Canyon Springs 20-15 victory. A fight erupted and punches were thrown as coaches and players from both teams clustered near midfield. School district police used pepper spray to end the melee.
High school sporting events aren’t supposed to end with brawls or players and coaches being pepper sprayed.
2. Interceptions can certainly change a game. Look at Clark’s Isaiah Veal, who picked off three passes to key the Chargers 36-0 win over Desert Oasis. Veal has six interceptions already to help Clark to a 2-1 record.
You can also look at Cheyenne’s Anthony Walker, who picked off three passes in a 45-30 victory over Valley. The Desert Shields intercepted seven passes and forced eight turnovers in earning their first win of the season.
3. First-year Cimarron-Memorial head coach Kory Walker seems to have the Spartans on the right track. The Spartans went 1-8 last season, and won two games the year before. But Cimarron moved to 3-0 on Friday after scoring with 31 seconds left to knock off Centennial, 31-28.
Cimarron is looking for its first winning record since 2013, but the Spartans won’t have an easy time in the rugged Northwest League.

Upset of the week
Mojave 38, Moapa Valley 20 — There isn’t a Class 3A school with more football tradition than Moapa Valley, which has advanced to the state title game nine times since 2006. Mojave, on the other hand, has only made the playoffs four times in the school’s history.
But the Rattlers weren’t fazed, scoring the final 18 points of the game to knock off the Pirates. Mojave rushed for 410 yards, led by Tawee Walker, who had 234 yards and four TDs.

— Mojave coach Abraham Gonzalez after the Rattlers upset Moapa Valley, 38-20.
“It was very important, this is our rivalry for ‘The Real SV,’ so it took a lot of heart for us to come out here and dominate them. We wanted this win, so we came out and we dominated on the field.”
