Here’s a look back at Week 10 of high school football

Here’s a look at what happened during Week 10 of the high school football season.

WHAT WE LEARNED

1. Who says variety is the spice of life? Arbor View didn’t need to vary its play calling much on Thursday night against Centennial, feeding sophomore running back Deago Stubbs again and again in the second half of a 14-7 win.

Stubbs had 11 carries for 62 yards on the go-ahead scoring drive, and coach Dan Barnson said eight of those carries were the exact same play. Still, Centennial had no answer, and Stubbs finished with 139 yards.

2. It looks like the Division I-A game of the year will be next Friday in Overton when Desert Pines takes on Moapa Valley in a rematch of last season’s I-A state title game.

Moapa Valley’s R.J. Hubert and Desert Pines’ Isaiah Morris and Randal Grimes are among the most explosive players in the state at any level.

The Jaguars haven’t lost a game on the field this season, but got off to a slow start on Thursday before pulling away for a 35-7 win over Cheyenne.

Moapa Valley had no such trouble against Sierra Vista, as quarterback Nate Cox completed 15 of 26 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-12 Moapa Valley win.

Cox threw six interceptions when the teams met earlier this season in a game that Desert Pines won 34-20 on the field and later forfeited for using an ineligible player. If Cox can bounce back with a performance more like the one he had Thursday, the game could be plenty interesting.

3. Chaparral might be the area’s most improved team. The Cowboys went 5-5 last year, but improved to 8-2 with a 34-12 victory over Mojave in the opening round of the I-A Southern Region playoffs.

And Chaparral has continued to improve throughout the season. Mojave dominated the Cowboys, 25-0, in Week 1, but had no answer for the them on Thursday.

Chaparral has plenty of weapons, led by two-way standout Richard Nelson, and the way the Cowboys might be ready to throw a scare into Sunset League champion Faith Lutheran, which hosts the Cowboys in a I-A state quarterfinal next Friday.

Faith Lutheran won its ninth consecutive game Thursday. The Crusaders continue to plug away, piling up wins in a manner that’s more about production than flash.

UPSET OF THE WEEK

Silverado 21, Las Vegas 7 — The Skyhawks hadn’t beaten a team that currently has a winning record … until Thursday night.

Silverado put together a dominant defensive performance, holding the Wildcats to 67 yards of offense and just two first downs.

That was against a Las Vegas team that had scored 34 or more points in every game this season and was riding a six-game win streak.

Seth Georgelos, who had only 19 carries on the season entering the game, rushed 28 times for 152 yards and a touchdown to lead a clock-consuming offense.

QUOTABLE

“The feeling is outrageous. It’s crazy. It could have went either way. Kudos to those guys, they played tough. But you know what? We were the better team, the better program.”

— Arbor View senior Gage Motl after the Aggies beat rival Centennial, 17-14, to claim the Northwest League title.

“With the kids playing at this level, we talk about mental toughness. We know we’re strong, but mental toughness. When our back’s against the wall, we step up to the plate, and I think they did that tonight.”

— Chaparral coach Paul Nihipali after the Cowboys beat Mojave, 34-12, in the opening round of the I-A Southern Region playoffs.

“Whenever you play a team like Liberty and get beat up, there’s going to be a gut-check the next week. Our defense stepped up tonight. We are a defensive team, and we need the defense to carry us.”

— Silverado coach Randall Cunningham after the Skyhawks held eighth-ranked Las Vegas to 67 yards in a 21-7 road win.

“I love the kid. He’s getting a lot of carries for us. He really runs hard, and he finishes a lot of runs going forward and breaking tackles. He ran extremely hard tonight … probably as well as I’ve seen him run. He’s a heckuva football player. He’s carried us for a few games and no exception tonight.”

— Foothill coach Marty Redmond on senior running back Justice Jackson, who rushed for 194 yards and three TDs on 37 carries in a 38-35 win over Coronado.

“We will never apologize for our success, because our kids do work hard. It’s mind blowing to think we have had that type of success over the years. But again, we will not apologize for it. These kids work hard and prepare each week for the game at hand.”

— Bishop Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez after the Gaels defeated Palo Verde 70-3. Gorman has won 72 straight against Nevada opponents, dating back to a loss against the Panthers in the Sunset Region final in 2008.

“We had to make some adjustments at halftime. In the second half we imposed our will … and we beat ’em up a little bit with the run game.”

— Desert Pines coach Tico Rodriguez, whose team shook off a slow start to beat Cheyenne, 35-7, in the opening round of the I-A Southern Region playoffs.
