Deago Stubbs, Kyle Graham explode in Arbor View rout
It’s scary enough when a team has a dynamic playmaker opposing defenses can’t stop. It’s downright terrifying when a team has two.
Senior Deago Stubbs had 219 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns Saturday for Arbor View, and junior teammate Kyle Graham went for 117 yards and four touchdowns as the Aggies coasted to a 55-26 victory at Shadow Ridge.
“When we have a unit like this, we always know if one of us gets tired or goes down, we can always put the next guy in, and he’ll do the job right,” Graham said.
Stubbs has been the Aggies’ go-to guy, but Saturday might have been Graham’s coronation as their next big thing. He entered the game with two touchdowns before his four against Shadow Ridge, showing the same explosive ability that has made Stubbs so dangerous.
Graham scored the Aggies’ first two touchdowns with runs of 24 and 56 yards, then added a third near the end of the first half. The junior also hauled in a 30-yard touchdown catch.
“He’s going to be a big leader of the team,” Stubbs said. “He’s a big leader of the team now, so especially for his senior year.”
Stubbs turned in a familiar performance. After the teams traded touchdowns on their opening drives, he broke free untouched for a 79-yard score. That made it 14-6, and when Shadow Ridge pulled within a touchdown at the end of the first quarter, Stubbs scored on a 69-yard run for a 28-13 lead.
That would be the closest Shadow Ridge would come again.
“We have a lot of weapons on offense, so you can’t really key in on one person,” Stubbs said. “If they start keying in on (Graham), I’m going to be open, or if they start keying in on me, someone else is going to be open.”
It took Arbor View (4-0, 2-0 Northwest League) just 19 plays to score six touchdowns in the first half. The Aggies had 10 plays go for at least 20 yards in the game, including seven touchdowns.
Shadow Ridge (3-1, 0-1) saw most of its offense run through running back Aubrey Nellems. The senior workhorse rushed 19 times for 187 yards and three touchdowns, including a 76-yard score on the game’s first series.
