Basic-Clark football game will be ruled double forfeit
For the second consecutive season, Basic’s football team will miss games because of forfeits.
After an on-field incident with Clark during Friday’s game, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association will announce that the game will be a double forfeit. Basic also will forfeit its next two games and Clark will forfeit one, NIAA executive director Bart Thompson said Wednesday.
The official announcement is expected Thursday.
Basic coach Jeff Cahill said he had no reaction to the news. Clark coach Ricky Pickens said he has been “instructed to refer all comments to the NIAA.”
A late hit by Clark on Basic quarterback Paul Myro triggered a fight during the game. Players immediately jumped on one another, and the altercation lasted about a minute.
The game was suspended by referees with 1:13 remaining in the second quarter with Basic leading 35-13.
Basic received an extra game in part because the offense was the team’s second, after an altercation with Canyon Springs triggered the use of pepper spray by school district police last season. Basic and Canyon Springs were handed a double forfeit, and both schools also had to forfeit their following week’s game.
Both of Basic’s next two games, against Shadow Ridge and Mojave, were nonleague games, but it means the team will have five losses because of forfeits over the last two years.
Clark will forfeit Friday’s game against Cheyenne.
Shadow Ridge coach Travis Foster said he had dialogue with Cheyenne coaches about playing each other Friday but decided to take the bye week.
Mojave coach Abraham Gonzalez also said his team will take the bye on Sept. 14.
Basic’s next game will be a nonleague home game against Las Vegas on Sept. 21. Clark will return to the field the same day in its Southwest League opener at home against Spring Valley.
