5 high school football games to watch this week

Here’s a look at some of Friday’s most interesting high school football games.

Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) (4-2) at Bishop Gorman (8-0) — Don Bosco isn’t ranked nationally, but has a win over Archbishop Rummel, which is the No. 1 team in Louisiana according to maxpreps.com.

The Ironmen figure to be the last big test for the Gaels, at least until they get deep into the playoffs. Gorman has been rolling against local competition, with 202 points in their last three games.

But Don Bosco’s defense should be a test for Gorman, as the Ironmen have allowed a total of 74 points this season.

Liberty (6-1, 2-0 Northeast) at Silverado (4-2, 1-0) — The Skyhawks are coming off a bye and won their last game 52-0. But it’s still hard to imagine them having enough firepower to slow down second-ranked Liberty.

The Patriots are scoring at rate almost as high as Gorman, with a pair of 70-plus point games already this season.

Desert Oasis (6-2, 2-1 Northwest) at Centennial (6-1, 2-0) — Desert Oasis’ record looks pretty, but the reality is that the Diamondbacks haven’t beaten a team with a winning record this season.

In fact, those six wins have come against opponents with a combined record of 7-38.

This could be a trap game for Centennial, though. The Bulldogs have Arbor View on the schedule next week, with the league title potentially on the line, and they might be looking past Desert Oasis.

Legacy (2-5, 1-1 Southwest) at Palo Verde (3-4, 2-0) — These are the next two best teams in the Southwest League after Gorman.

There hasn’t been much reason to watch a Southwest League game before now. Shadow Ridge and Durango both are still winless, and Gorman has beaten its three league opponents by a combined 202-21.

But this one could be interesting, with the winner essentially locking up a home playoff game.

Pahrump Valley (3-5, 2-4 Sunset) at Sierra Vista (2-6, 2-4) — This game could have serious playoff implications in the Division I-A Sunset League.

The Trojans and Mountain Lions (along with Clark) are all a game behind Spring Valley for the league’s final playoff berth.

But the Grizzlies face first-place Faith Lutheran this week, and Clark goes up against second-place Cheyenne.

Assuming the favorites win those two games, Sierra Vista could claim the league’s final playoff berth with a win over the Trojans. The Mountain Lions beat Spring Valley last week, and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
