FISHING REPORT

* LAKE MEAD — Fishing has been slow. Striper fishermen have seen boils in the Overton Arm. Boils occur when shad leap from the water in huge numbers as they try to escape stripers. If you see a boil, throw hardware or plastic baits that resemble shad.

Catfish have been taking bait in coves. Try night crawlers or stink baits.

Bluegill have been active in the backs of coves west of the Narrows. Try mealworms suspended on small hooks.

* LAKE MOHAVE — Action for striped bass generally picks up in the spring. That has yet to happen this year.

* LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — The five ponds recently have been stocked with catfish. Early mornings and late afternoons are good times to fish. Catfish can be taken on night crawlers, prepared stink baits or shrimp. Fish bait on the bottom, but don’t use much weight.

* EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Fishing has been fair. Early morning and late evening are the most productive times. A 2-pound brown trout and a largemouth bass that weighed nearly 5 pounds were caught recently. Spinners, prepared baits and worms continue to produce fish.

* ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Trout are biting. Night crawlers and PowerBait are a good bet. Anglers are catching largemouth bass and a few crappie. Fish the shady side of weed beds with a small Gitzit, brown with pepper spots.

* KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Anglers looking for trout should go deep. Shade is at a premium, so look for shaded pockets of water. Early morning, late afternoon and early evening will be most productive. Work the edges of cover for largemouth bass.

* ELY AREA — Illipah and Cave Lake are fishing well. Night crawlers, PowerBait and spinners have taken trout. Comins Lake activity has dropped significantly along with the reservoir’s trout population. Illegally planted northern pike have decimated this fishery.
