FISHING REPORT
* LAKE MEAD — This spring has been good for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Smallies once were caught only in the Overton Arm, but they have made their way into the Boulder Basin. Catfish have begun to show up in the Vegas Wash area. Much of the striped bass catch is small stuff. Anglers are taking schooling stripers in the Vegas Bay area on cut bait as well as in the Hemenway area, though fishing has been somewhat slow overall.
* LAKE MOHAVE — Striper fishing remains sluggish, but anglers have found success while trolling anchovies along the cliffs across from Cottonwood Cove and the area near 45 Mile. The fish taken near the cliffs have been averaging 15 to 18 inches in length. Those caught near 45 Mile have been larger, with many reaching 20 to 25 inches. They seem to favor lures like the Castaic Trout or others designed to resemble planter-size rainbows. Nevada Bay, Ski Cove and Cottontail Cove produced largemouth bass during a tournament last weekend. Coves just north and south of Cottonwood were productive. Plastics and spinner baits did the trick. Trout anglers have found success at Willow Beach with spinners and PowerBait.
* LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — Trout fishing has slowed at urban ponds as daytime temperatures increase. Work water inlets or shaded areas where water temperatures might be cooler. Catfish have been stocked in each of the valley’s urban ponds and will provide even the most ardent angler with a good fight. If night crawlers or stink baits don’t work, try small shrimp.
* EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Warming temperatures should improve fishing. Rainbow and tiger trout can be caught using PowerBait, worms, flies or spinners. Rooster Tails, Panther Martins and Mepps spinners are good choices. Anglers have done well near the boat dock. Boat anglers might want to work along the reed beds on the reservoir’s southeast side.
* ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Fishing has been good for largemouth bass, crappie and rainbow trout. Anglers have found bass and crappie in the narrows and along structures. Both fish will take small jigs and Gitzits. Plastics are another option for bass. Rainbows favor PowerBait, flies and hardware. Warming temperatures will push the trout to deeper water.
* KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Strong winds and white caps have kept most anglers off the water. Fishing for rainbow trout and largemouth bass should pick up with warmer temperatures and calmer winds.
* COMINS LAKE — Pike fishing has turned on, with three weighing 11, 17 and 20 pounds. Trout fishing still is slow as water temperatures remain low and are holding the fish in spawning mode. With a couple of weeks of warmer nighttime temperatures, trout fishing should pick up. At Cave Lake, rainbow trout are taking PowerBait, worms and spinners.
