FISHING REPORT

• LAKE MEAD — Trout anglers have found good action for stocked rainbows near the Hemenway fishing pier, or at least where it is supposed to be. high winds broke up the pier last month.

Trout fishing also has been good at B-5 Road in the days following the trout plants. Striped bass are hitting slow in the Hemenway and B-F road, with occasional reports that a good-size fish has been caught. Such is the case with a 10-pound, 8-ounce striper reeled in by a lucky boater.

Anglers still are finding shad and stripers in the Vegas Wash area, though most are in the 1- to 3-pound category.

• LAKE MOHAVE — Fishing activity has been slow, with few anglers making the trip to Willow Beach over the weekend. Those who did found little success either from the shoreline or from boats. That was true for trout and striper fishermen, and it didn’t matter what anglers were casting to the fish.

The report is similar for those working out of Cottonwood Cove. Striper fishing has been slow, though one angler reportedly caught five fish with a total weight near 20 pounds.

Some anglers blame the slowdown on the return of shad to the lake.

• LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — PowerBait, flies and assorted hardware have been taking planter rainbows.

Fish prepared baits on hooks no larger than size 16, and prepare your bait to match. If you practice catch-and-release fishing, use a fly or hardware and handle the fish as little as possible. Don’t hold them with a towel because that removes their slimy, protective coating.

Mepps and Panther Martin spinners are a good choice when it comes to hardware. For flies, use something with flash to it.

• EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — The ice is about 6 inches thick, but fishing pressure remains light.

For those who are hesitant to walk on the ice, drill your hole right next to the dock and fish from there. It is a popular method for fishing this reservoir.

Always check for the latest ice conditions before venturing onto the ice.

• ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Thin ice and unsafe conditions are reported.

• KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — The reservoirs are about 85 percent to 90 percent iced up, though ducks are holding on small patches of open water.

Open water would suggest unsafe ice conditions, though some anglers have been testing the ice. Always use extreme caution, and verify the thickness of the ice before walking upon it.
