FISHING REPORT

LAKE MEAD — Fishing near Temple Bar has been an off-and-on proposition for the past few weeks, but it turned on at the right time for one angler who hauled in a 45-inch, 42-pound striped bass that was weighed and measured at Temple Bar Marina last week. The fish smacked a Rattle Trap the angler cast into a boil. Largemouth fishermen have had to work for their fish in that area.

LAKE MOHAVE — Trout anglers using PowerBait and PowerWorms are catching limits of stocked rainbows from the fishing pier and from the shoreline upstream and downstream from the pier. Popular colors include orange, green and rainbow. The best bite is in the early morning. Striper anglers aren’t faring as well, as fishing from the shoreline has been unproductive. Boaters have done better. Reports from anglers are that a 24-pound and a 32-pound striper were caught on swimbaits south of Willow Beach.

Traffic in and out of Cottonwood Cove was busy over the unseasonably warm weekend. The points north and south of the marina continue to provide good fishing action for small stripers and catfish to 2 pounds. The fish are taking cut bait. Boaters are catching stripers as large as 6 pounds while trolling near the cove mouths.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — The last catfish plant was Sept. 18. Night crawlers, stinkbait, shrimp or chicken livers are good baits. For bluegill and sunfish, go with a mealworm fished on a small hook below a bobber, or try a No. 18 pheasant tail or similar fly pattern fished behind a plastic bubble.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Olive or brown fly patterns, such as Woolly Buggers and hare’s ear nymphs, are catching rainbow and tiger trout, as are PowerBait, worms, mini marshmallows and small spinners. Rooster Tail, Mepp’s and Panther Martin spinners are good hardware choice. Brown trout should start showing up now that fall has arrived.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The water is low, but that means fish are concentrated and anglers are catching small bass, crappie and rainbow trout.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Bass and rainbow trout are bending rods here. Plastics and spinner baits are working on the bass, and PowerBait has been catching trout. If this continues, the Oct. 11 duck opener will provide a great opportunity for doubling up on birds and fish.
