Dragons, Pioneers turned out

While several area teams had their final preseason scrimmages scheduled for Friday night, the players at Canyon Springs and Del Sol thought they were getting their season going for real.

They were wrong.

Half of the field lights went out three times, and officials finally suspended the game with 5:23 to go in the third quarter and Del Sol leading 21-19.

Because it is a nonleague game, Ray Mathis, the director of athletics for the Clark County School District, said it would not be made up and would go down as a no contest.

“Obviously we want to play the whole game,” Del Sol coach Preston Goroff said. “We’re trying to get into game shape, and something like this definitely doesn’t help out.”

The lights first went out with 6:06 to go in the second quarter. After a 17-minute delay, play resumed and the teams competed for eight more minutes before the lights went out again with 2:34 left in the first half.

At that point, Mathis and the officials decided to call it halftime, and the teams went to the locker room.

The lights came back on just before the end of halftime but went out again midway through the third quarter, and the game was called.

Del Sol was able to grind out yards early behind its massive offensive line, and the Dragons took a 21-7 lead.

But Canyon Springs responded with big plays, as quarterback Devonte Christopher hit Raveon Samuel with a 20-yard TD pass before halftime. Christopher then ran 29 yards for a TD to cut the lead to two with 5:54 to go in the third, but the game ended moments later.

“If we played the whole game, I really feel like we win that football game,” Canyon Springs coach Matt Jenkins said. “The momentum was on our side, and defensively from midway through the second quarter on, we actually showed up and played.”

Rancho 31, Liberty 17 — At Rancho, James Cammack threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score as the Rams opened their new football field with a victory.

Cammack threw a 21-yard pass to Kevin Dupree and a 17-yarder to DiJon Holman as Rancho snapped a 17-game losing streak.

“This wasn’t a monkey on our back; this was a gorilla,” Rancho coach Gary Maki said. “There was plenty of pressure on these kids with the losing streak going on for so long. However, we played well tonight and made plays when we needed to.”

Dupree also returned a fumble 60 yards for a TD, and Alex Lauriano added a 23-yard field goal in the first half.

Liberty’s lone points of the half came on a 25-yard Jeff Sinacori field goal.

Cammack’s 8-yard score at the 3:21 mark of the final period gave Rancho a 31-9 lead.

Liberty’s Michael Denton took the ensuing kickoff and raced 89 yards for the final score. Denton had 270 all-purpose yards for the Patriots.

Ian Jackson, who led all rushers with 135 yards on 33 carries, scored the other Liberty touchdown.

Coronado 19, Chaparral 14 — At Chaparral, Brady McManus connected with T.J. Knowles for a 20-yard touchdown pass as time expired to lift the Cougars over the Cowboys.

The touchdown enraged Chaparral’s coaching staff, which argued that an official had blown a whistle just before the final snap to signify that the game had ended.

Several players from both teams appeared to support those claims when they began walking off the field. But Knowles ran uncontested into the end zone, caught the game winner and watched as an official signaled that Coronado had won.

McManus, who led the 85-yard winning drive, completed 9 of 15 passes for 101 yards. He also had 68 yards on 17 carries. Teammate J.J. Johnson rushed 18 times for 88 yards.

Quenton McCloud led the Cowboys, who rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing 13-2 late in the third. Tyquise Anthony’s late 17-yard run gave Chaparral the lead with 5:41 left to play.

Silverado quarterback Nick Underwood, a 6-foot-7-inch senior, ambled 85 yards to the end zone on an option keeper.

On defense, the Skyhawks tallied four sacks and a pair of turnovers, including Paul Albright’s interception and score from 27 yards out in the second quarter that made it 21-0.

Josh Smith accounted for Valley’s only score on a 2-yard run on the last play.

Durango scored twice on defense in a 2:07 span in the second quarter. Stetson Ybarra returned a fumble 63 yards for a touchdown, and a bad snap on a punt during Eldorado’s next series resulted in a safety.

Joey Baraga scored on a 16-yard run early in the second quarter to help the Trailblazers build a 22-0 halftime lead.

Flores’ second TD run pushed the lead to 28-0 midway through the third quarter.

Eldorado’s Desmond Haynes returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to set up the Sundevils’ lone score, a 29-yard screen pass from Manuel Estrada to Ezaevin Williams.
