Daniel Tosh bets $25K on Patriots to help sick friend and wins

Ever think about trying to double your life savings by betting it all on one game?

Um, yeah, neither have we. But comedian Daniel Tosh tried something similar to that this week when he took the $25,000 he’d raised to help his friend — comedian Andy Ritchie, who’s suffering from a brain tumor — and bet it all on the New England Patriots to cover the 3½-point first-half spread Thursday against the Miami Dolphins, Tosh’s favorite team.

Thankfully for Tosh and his buddy, the Patriots cruised to a 19-0 halftime lead, turning the $25,000 into almost $46,000 for Ritchie’s medical expenses.

“Could’ve been a little more subtle Miami, but thx for winning my bet #forandy,” Tosh posted on his Twitter account beneath an image of his winning ticket from the Mirage sports book. “Now quit f’ing around in the 2nd half!”

The Dolphins lost, 36-7, but Tosh took care of business. Before the game, Tosh told the Hollywood Reporter it was pretty much a no-lose proposition for him.

“If my Dolphins are winning, I’m happy. If they’re losing, Andy gets some much-needed help. If the Dolphins are only losing by three points, there is no God,” said Tosh. “So please, Tom Brady, once in your life, you and Bill (Belichick) use your shady, dishonest cheating powers for good in the first half only. In the second half, I hope you get the (crap) kicked out of you.”

Tosh had raised the initial $25,000 by auctioning off props and costumes from his Comedy Central show, “Tosh.o.” But it still wasn’t nearly enough for his Ritchie’s medical expenses, so Tosh said “I’ve decided to do the responsible thing and gamble.”

“Once I double it, (Ritchie) can do whatever he wants with it; go on a lion-hunting safari or get treatment,” Tosh said.

Tosh also urged his viewers Tuesday to donate to a GoFundMe page for Ritchie’s medical bills that has raised almost $47,000 of the $250,000 needed.

Charlie Siskel, the executive producer of Tosh’s show, said there was no backup plan if Tosh lost the bet.

“This is the lock of the week,” he said before the game. “We can’t lose.”

If only they were all that easy.
