Coronado claims Spring Bash
April 5, 2007 - 9:00 pm
Coronado’s Ryan McIntyre hadn’t seen much time on the mound this season, but the junior right-hander couldn’t have played a bigger role on Wednesday.
McIntyre pitched a three-hitter to lead Coronado to a 1-0 win over Cleveland (Calif.) for the Purple Division 3 championship in the Blazer Spring Bash at Sierra Vista High School.
"When you play five ballgames in three days, it’s about pitching," Coronado coach Adam Maxwell said. "Ryan McIntyre, he’s thrown one inning all year. And we’ve just had different guys stepping up all year."
McIntyre gave up two first-inning singles but didn’t allow another hit until the seventh.
He also got some help from his defense, as the Cougars turned two double plays, including an unusual one to preserve the lead in the fifth.
Two walks and a throwing error put runners on second and third with one out. Cleveland’s David Bierman lifted a fly ball to shallow center. Brandon Evans made a diving catch, then threw a strike to home plate to gun down Alex Gast to end the inning.
The game’s only run came in the top of the first. Ben Morris led off the game with a triple and later scored on a passed ball.
