Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s son: ‘I played football for my father’

Former Bishop Gorman High School standout Cordell Broadus shed some light on his decision to end his football career in a birthday message on Instagram for his father, rapper Snoop Dogg, who turned 44 on Tuesday.

A former UCLA signee who left the team before the season began, Broadus revealed that he only played football to please his famous father.

“I played football for my father because I thought that was the only way he would love me & be apart of my life,” Broadus, 18, wrote. “It took me 12 years to realize he loves Cordell Broadus the person not Cordell Broadus the football player. The best day of my life was when I heard those exact words; I love you dad hope you have a great birthday.”

Broadus transferred to Gorman in January 2014 from Diamond Bar High in Southern California. A four-star recruit for the class of 2015, Broadus caught 39 passes for 602 yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior season as the Gaels went undefeated and won the state title. Despite his dad being a diehard USC fan, Broadus in February committed to play for rival UCLA.

When Broadus didn’t show up for the Bruins’ fall camp, coach Jim Mora said he’d decided “to pursue other passions in his life, including his love of film.”

Broadus and his father were featured in a reality series on ESPN titled “Snoop & Son: A Dad’s Dream.” Perhaps Broadus will follow up that project with his first feature-length film, “The Doggfather.”
