College golfer turns down $10K after making hole-in-one
Boston College golfer Brian Butler knows how Spaulding Smails felt in “Caddyshack” when he said, “I want a hamburger, no a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog, I want a milkshake, I want potato chips” before his grandfather, Judge Smails, grabbed his arm and said, “You’ll get nothing and like it!”
Butler turned down a $10,000 cash prize Monday for making a hole-in-one at a golf tournament in Wyoming, R.I. so he wouldn’t lose his amateur status.
“I’m not going to give up my last year of college golf for $10,000,” Butler, a Boston College junior, told Golfweek.
Butler aced the 158-yard 18th hole at The Preserve at Boulder Hills to finish at 3-over 57 and qualify for The Benrus Open, which will take place June 18 at the new par-3 course. If the finance major makes a hole-in-one at that event, he would win $1 million, making his decision to go back to school a bit more difficult.
“That,” he said, laughing, “would probably be a different story.”
