Shane Mosley headlines 2018 Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame
With numerous Las Vegas fights on his resume, Shane Mosley was a lock to get into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame one day.
But the former three-division champion kept stalling his enshrinement after fighting well into his 40s. At age 46, Mosley was finally ready to be recognized for his memorable bouts in the fight capital of the world.
“They’re going to rush me into the Hall of Fame faster than they retired me,” a laughing Mosley said. “I might have a couple fights in me. I don’t know, but I’m happy.”
Mosley headlines the 14-member 2018 Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame class that was announced Thursday by NVBHOF CEO Michelle Corrales-Lewis.
Laila Ali, Chris Byrd, Todd duBoef, Kevin Kelley, Don Minor, Jerry Roth, Earnie Shavers and former Nevada Sen. Harry Reid also were selected. Alexis Arguello, Henry Armstrong, Jack Kearns, Bill Miller and Aaron Pryor will be inducted posthumously.
Mosley is best remembered for his two victories against Oscar De La Hoya. He shocked the boxing world with a split decision over De La Hoya in 2000 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Mosley recorded a unanimous decision in the De La Hoya rematch at the MGM Grand in 2003.
“There’s nothing I can do about that. That’s the signature fight,” Mosley said of his bouts against De La Hoya. “That’s a great fight. Both of us at the top of our game, same weight, same age, same everything, and we both went toe-to-toe for 12 rounds, and I had a great night that night.”
Mosley (49-10-1, 41 knockout) faced the best fighters of his generation in Las Vegas, including bouts against Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Fernando Vargas and Ronald “Winky” Wright.
Mosley said Thursday he was done fighting and is focused on helping his son, Shane Jr., improve as a pro boxer. Mosley last fought in 2016, losing to David Avanesyan.
“I’m not going to fight ever again,” Mosley said. “My son is coming up and he wants to make the Mosley family happy, and it’s time for me to step aside and let him be the man I know he can be.”
The 2018 Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame class is scheduled for Aug. 18 at Caesars Palace. Tickets start at $95 and are available on NVBHOF.com.
