Bonanza can’t stop late surge by Idaho team

Bonanza’s girls basketball team couldn’t get to the finish line quickly enough.

The Bengals led Post Falls (Idaho) by four points with 61/2 minutes left in Saturday’s game but scored only two points the rest of the way.

Post Falls finished on a 21-2 run to beat Bonanza 53-38 in the Gold Division championship game of the Basic Lady Wolves Holiday Tournament.

The Bengals rallied from a 29-22 deficit to pull ahead by four on Christin Figgins’ three-point play with 6:46 left.

Bonanza seemed to have plenty of momentum but not enough energy.

“We spent all of our energy getting over the hump, and then we had a little letdown,” Bonanza coach Dean Bosch said.

The Bengals, who have only seven varsity players and were playing their fourth game in 48 hours, made one of their final 12 shots.

Post Falls made its only five field goals of the quarter in a three-minute span to take a

44-36 lead. The rest of the damage was done from the free-throw line, where Post Falls was 16 of 17 in the game.

Figgins led Bonanza scorers with 17 points and played all 32 minutes at a breakneck pace.

“She has a huge heart. She is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen,” Bosch said. “She gives it everything every time.”

In the Silver Division title game, Mojave couldn’t overcome the adversity it faced before the game even started and lost to Butler (Pa.) 69-44.

The Rattlers, who found out late Friday that Saturday’s game time was moved up 90 minutes, didn’t have a bus to make the trip to Basic and had to have players drive to the game.

Earlier Saturday morning, starting center Jasmine Osteen badly sprained a finger in practice and couldn’t play.

Mojave, which trailed 25-5 after one quarter, got 21 points from Chelsea Hopkins.

“We had to deal with things we had no control over,” Mojave coach Rochuel Grayson said. “We were sluggish early, but we picked it up.

“For them to come out and still give 100 percent, you can’t ask for more.”
