Big second half lifts Del Sol

Del Sol football coach Preston Goroff expected his team to win Friday, but he didn’t think a victory over Green Valley would come so easily.

Goroff’s squad recovered from a slow first half to roll over the host Gators 36-13.

Bryan Grenier rushed 19 times for 197 yards and three touchdowns to lead the fourth-ranked Dragons (5-0, 3-0 Southeast), who amassed 430 yards while holding Green Valley (2-4, 1-1) to 178.

“Halftime was key,” Goroff said. “I thought we kind of came back and wore them down a bit in the second half.”

Grenier agreed but said his offensive line deserved most of the credit.

“I think we have the best line in the state,” he said. “We feel like if we want to run, no one’s going to stop us.”

Even so, the Dragons scored their first touchdown on a pass. Matthew Burge capped Del Sol’s opening drive with a 17-yard TD completion to Timothy Lawson to finish an eight-play opening drive.

Green Valley needed less than two minutes to tie the score at 7, but Grenier’s 10-yard run late in the first quarter gave Del Sol a 15-7 lead.

Though the Gators scored on a 21-yard run by Frank Satterfield early in the second half to close their gap to 15-13, Grenier spent the remainder of the half leading several long scoring drives for the Dragons. His second touchdown of the half made the score 29-13 early in the fourth quarter.

“We came in wanting to play power football,” Goroff said. “We wanted to establish the run and play good defense, and we did.”

Del Sol’s Jonathan Kirschbaum had 10 carries for 96 yards. Satterfield rushed 15 times for 76 yards and a touchdown to lead Green Valley.

The teams combined for three touchdowns and Nixon’s near score in the final 2:22 of regulation.

Shadow Ridge took a 30-28 lead on Deantwan Miller’s 16-yard TD run and then failed on a try for a 2-point conversion.
