Today at Santa Anita: Oct. 19, 2014

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA by Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $56,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

8 Susan B Good – The Leandro Mora train just keeps a rolling; they haven’t used the good bugboy Drayden Van Dyke very much.

6 Three Blondes – Suspect Rafael Bejarano may try rating tactics this go round; is 0-for-8 on turf, but 6-times in the money.

Long Shot – 1 Cee’s Tizzy Belle

Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

3 When We Met – I like horses that win a race while running a lower Beyer speed figure; gelding has won four in a row now.

2 Gal Has to Like It – Responded with a nice win first off the claim by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; still has room for improvement.

Long Shot – 4 Sacred Ovation

Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

6 Cernobbio – This is a really slow group so he may inherit the lead late; has some back class races that could beat these.

5 Pioneer Charlie – Miserable effort in last, but the key race to repeat is the one two back; yet to repeat a strong debut race.

Long Shot – 3 Warren’s Sunny Boy

Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds snd up

5 Jomelo – When you bet Philip D’Amato horses, you feel like you get your money’s worth; this one will be charging fast late.

7 Contributor – Tepid chalk was claimed two back by Julio Canani; last race was a test drive, expect improvement tonight.

Long Shot – 2 Sizzlin’ Joe

Race 5 – 7 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

2 Quinnette – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this comfort level; Ron Ellis barn is winless at meet, but that duck won’t last long.

1 Love the Breeding – Claimed by Mike Pupye and plunged down in class; either admitting a mistake or desparate for a victory.

Long Shot – 6 Papaslilprincess

Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), $75,000 Uniformity, 3-year-olds

7 Red Outlaw – Undefeated in five starts, has shown true grit in close finishes; aided by the turf rail out 30 feet today.

5 Street Icon – When you like the downhill turf course, it sticks with you; ran a gutsy race last winter for Corey Nakatani.

Long Shot – 8 Home School

Race 7 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

9 Girl Downstairs – Bob Baffert filly is liable to improve a lot today; at $110K, this is one of his cheaper, low rent 2-YOs.

4 Windy Forecast – Class relief from the grade 1 Debutante for this; figures to be overbet, but is a very logical horse to use.

Long Shot – 8 Suva Harbor

Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

3 Law Dog – Ran a better than looked race in last; like the cutback in distance and the switch to Rafael Bejarano.

2 Gangnam Guy – Ran like a horse that hated Del Mar turf; has a good resume over Santa Anita sod, give him another chance.

Long Shot – 10 Frensham

Race 9 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

7 Push Girl – Showed spunk early in debut before collapsing late; takes the blinkers off and figures to try the same tactics.

8 Southern Owah – Started slow in debut and didn’t do a whole lot after that; respect Vann Belvoir barn to show improvement here.

Long Shot – 2 Turn On

Best Bet – 7 Red Outlaw (race 6)

Santa Anita Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/4/$28.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.40

Santa Anita Totals – 259/62/$378.80; Long Shots, 126/15/$190.40; Best Bets, 15/9/$35.00

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #4 Mesoma (5/2) in race 5 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Taris won at Keeneland paying $16.00 to win, $8.80 to place and $7.20 to show. Stats – 162/93/$894.80; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
