TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Spooky Lady – Huge class drop points to the obvious, if she’s right; tactical speed and a rail skimming trip.
4 Tribal Dress – Steve Miyadi is a high percentage NoCal trainer; brings his own rider down for the gig.
Long Shot – 2 Out of Thin Air
Race 2 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 On the Backstreets – FTS from the hot Peter Miller barn; suspect the tote board will tell you a lot more.
2 Ninnavee – Sometimes the experience of a race or two is a huge help; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – 4 Daylight’s Coming
Race 3 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Hanserella – Draw a line thru last over synthetics; her 3-for-3 in the money turf races points to a preferred surface.
3 Suances Pride – Tepid chalk is a FTS from Darrell Vienna; check the tote board before you go in real deep.
Long Shot – 1 Lakeside Bride
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Joe Carl – Claimed by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; gets reunited with Rafael Bejarano too, the one to beat.
6 Baron Von Red –
Long Shot – 2 Graeme Crackerjack
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $54,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Boller Bomb – Has won two straight on turf, but still gets no respect; tough if she maintains her sharp form.
5 Marinda – Exits a key race, which is always a plus; gets reunited with leading rider Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – 1 Foxy Boss
Race 6 – 7 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
6 Real Heat – Eric Kruljac tries blinkers on for this; Tyler Baze is a great send jockey, simple strategy.
5 Heat Flash – Dead late closer tries his first race over synthetics; will need a quick pace to aid the cause.
Long Shot – 4 Tricky Journey
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
4 Too Fast to Pass – Peter Miller and Garrett Gomez at 5/1 odds, juicy; tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
3 Wine Stock – Don’t usually like maiden winners stepping up; this is Bob Baffert and he can whatever he wants.
Long Shot – 6 Scherer Magic
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $21,000, Claiming 16,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Bipartisan – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low level; his race two back, if repeated, would upset these.
7 Ever Alert – Tepid chalk in a wide open finale; if you’re live in the pick 6, I hope you are spread.
Long Shot – 8 Our Boy Benjamin
Best Bet – 3 Joe Carl (race 4)
Hollywood Park Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/4/$24.60; Long Shots, 8/1/$13.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Park Totals – 271/72/$457.60; Long Shots, 128/17/$172.00; Best Bets, 15/3/$8.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #7 Ghost Is Clear (3/1) in race 8 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Cold Facts ran out at Churchill Downs. Stats – 81/54/$400.80; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
