South Point has prop bet on Patriots, Packers to go 16-0
The 2007 New England Patriots are the only NFL team ever to go 16-0 in the regular season.
What are the odds that the 2015 Patriots or Green Bay Packers can repeat the feat? According to South Point oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro, the odds on each team are minus-2,000 (20-1) that they won’t go undefeated and plus-1,200 (12-1) that they will go 16-0.
Vaccaro posted the prop bet Wednesday at the South Point.
“I thought it would be a little bit of fun,” he said. “People enjoy it. I’m sure we’ll write a lot of tickets and 95 percent of them will be between $10 and $50. People like the idea of having something to root for the entire year.
“You always lower the ‘dog side of it because that’s where you get all the tickets, but the bargain would be laying 20-1. That’s a low number.”
The 1972 Miami Dolphins went 14-0 in the regular season, but other than the 2007 Patriots, only one other team — the 2009 Indianapolis Colts — has started 14-0 since the NFL expanded its regular season to 16 games in 1978.
Four teams have started 13-0 — the 1998 Denver Broncos, 2005 Colts, 2009 New Orleans Saints and 2011 Packers — before losing their 14th game.
Five teams have finished 15-1, including the 1985 Chicago Bears — who were 12-0 when they lost to the Miami Dolphins on “Monday Night Football” — and the aforementioned 2011 Packers, who lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Patriots and Packers are among seven NFL teams that are undefeated through three games. New England, which has a bye this week, appears to have an easier path to perfection than Green Bay as the Packers have road games against three of the remaining unbeatens in Denver (Nov. 1), the Carolina Panthers (Nov. 8) and Arizona Cardinals (Dec. 27).
The Gold Sheet handicapper Bruce Marshall (goldsheet.com) expects Green Bay to be a slight underdog at Denver and Arizona.
Marshall also projects the Patriots to be a slight underdog at Denver on Nov. 29, but expects them to be favorites in their other remaining contests, including road games at the Dallas Cowboys (Oct. 11), Colts (Oct. 18) and New York Giants (Nov. 15), their Super Bowl nemesis.
“Everybody has tough games, but whether you have a good schedule or you’re playing the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers every week, you’re gonna bet on the team to go undefeated,” Vaccaro said of his prop. “The new generation of bettors likes a lot of assortment, a lot of different props. That’s what they like and that’s what we give them.”
