TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
5 Buds Pal – Chalk slides down the claiming ladder to this bottom rung; nowhere else to go from here but Los Alamitos.
6 Global Glow – Shown steady improvement since claimed by Jack Carava; his race last time may be enough to upset these.
Long Shot – 1 Bay Rush
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up
3 Blueskiesnrainbows – Been rejuvenated since joining the Jerry Hollendorfer barn; Rafael Bejarano is the stable rider in SoCal.
4 Phantom Lover – Ran right behind the chalk last time out; hard trying 5-YO is 6-for-9 in the money finishes.
Long Shot – 1 Canonize
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Candy’s Jewel – Ran for a $50K price tag two races ago and ran a nice second; Jerry Hollendorfer taking the blinkers off.
8 Southern Heart – Claimed at the maiden claiming bottom for $20K and aggressively raised by Paddy Gallagher; leap of faith.
Long Shot – 10 Sports Report
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Girl On the Lam – Choice strictly as the lesser of evils in here; did improve a lot in second career start.
5 Discreet Dee – Ran evenly in debut and barn has a penchant for improvement; key rider switch to Rafael Bejarano too.
Long Shot – 1 Para Angel
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Cavalletta – A 17-length loss typically doesn’t look very good; this filly shows a clear preference fog grass racing.
4 Born Lucky – Stuck in a surface switch race but ran over dirt anyway; conditioning race off a layoff will do her good.
Long Shot – 9 Sense of a Woman
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
2 Et Tu Walker – Tepid chalk has turned in four good races in a row for Doug O’Neill; consistent sort runs the same race.
7 Flower Power – Gutsy win last out and now moves up to the next condition; all the horses look the same in a difficult heat.
Long Shot – 4 Leothelion
Race 7 – 1 1/2 miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
2 Saint Loup – Chased Bright Thoughts in last who won next out in track record time; better than these with a repeat effort.
1 Toruk Makto – Was a good third behind the chalk in last; marathon distance is typically a gallopers race.
Long Shot – 7 Lime Rickey
Race 8 – 1 mile, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds and up
4 John’s War – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to defeat these.
9 Blazen All Star – Ran the race of her life last time for second; we’ll see if it was legit or a fluke performance.
Long Shot – 3 Victoria’s On Fire
Best Bet – 2 Saint Loup (race 7)
Santa Anita Park Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$23.60; Long Shots, 8/1/$9.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.00
Santa Anita Park Totals – 853/221/$1,437.50; Long Shots, 422/57/$658.20; Best Bets, 49/18/$70.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #1-1A entry (5/2) in race 7 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
