TODAY AT SANTA ANITA
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $47,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Stanwyck – Half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo; John Shirreffs has taken his time with her to allow mature development.
2 Revered – Stretches out around 2-turns for the first time; has shown late energy and with her pedigree, she should route.
Long Shot – 6 Miss Malibu
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 2-year-olds
3 Old Man Lake – Ran a clunker in last, his Santa Anita debut; his two prior races are both fast enough to beat these.
2 Zoom Bag – Won debut in sharp fashion, not sure what the heck he beat; still, he hasn’t done anything wrong yet.
Long Shot – 5 Romar Success
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $47,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
5 Money Talker – Been very well bet in five straight losses; knocking at the door at a very short price.
6 Tiznow Or Then – First time Lasix in fourth career start, an usual resume in SoCal racing; should move him forward.
Long Shot – 4 Mr T Bird
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $29,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Dylan Donnelly – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; best spot so far to graduate.
9 Stars and Moons – Woke up with a career best race first time for a price tag; second time blinkers on could be the key.
Long Shot – 4 Half Strike
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Warren’s Passion – Key question is can she repeat her maiden claiming win at Fairplex; flat out flew home over lesser lights.
8 Moon Stone Madness – Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; if you have the bankroll I’d go half the field, at least.
Long Shot – 5 Memo to Kathy
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Surely Swift – Victor Espinoza going for win number 2 at this meet; he’s far too good a rider to stay in this cold streak.
8 He Makes It Rain – Last was too poor to be true; draw a line thru it and leg up Garrett Gomez for the money shot.
Long Shot – 5 Awesome Year
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
6 Sweet Swap – With the turf rail out 30 feet, speed and tactical speed on the grass will be a major asset tonight.
5 Smokdey Lonesome – Has shown affinity for the hillside course and for Santa Anita sod; best stride will come late.
Long Shot – 7 Red Defense
Race 8 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 R Doubleday – Could finish what could be a pretty chalky card; speed to lead or follow close up.
7 My Moment Too – Ran greenly in debut, very slow early, but fast late; like that Corey Nakatani stays loyal to the cause.
Long Shot – 10 Ya Wanna Hug
Best Bet – 4 Stanwyck (race 1)
Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$30.00; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 274/62/$490.80; Long Shots, 141/25/$254.40; Best Bets, 16/3/$9.20
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #4 Icon Ike (3/1) in race 4 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Bubbly Jane ran out at Keeneland. Stats – 157/108/$951.10; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
