Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, May 30
May 29, 2015 - 8:12 pm
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds
6 Rainsford – NoCal shipper taking a big class drop to face softer; like that Jeff Bonde has hired top gun Rafael Bejarano.
1 Believe Too – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class; from the white hot Richard Baltas barn.
Long Shot – 2 Price of Glory
Race 2 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Star of Munster – Tepid chalk in a race full of FTS maidens; watch the tote board for additional clues.
4 Gracette – Like many in here has win early pedigree; that matters in an abbreviated sprint where it’s a literal drag race.
Long Shot – 1 Lov Fool
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Artistic Charm – She stretches out around 2-turns for the first time; even in England she was strictly a sprinter.
5 Yana – That was a sharp win on dirt last time; she doesn’t put wins together, but her last if repeated offers her a puncher’s chance.
Long Shot – 1 Screaming Skylar
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Go Jeremiah – His race two back is fast enough to graduate here if repeated; this is a real pedestrian group he’s facing.
3 All Around Brown – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this bottom rung; won’t find an easier spot unless he goes to Phoenix.
Long Shot – 2 Win Wish
Race 5 – 1 1/4 miles (turf), $400,000 American Oaks, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 Spanish Queen – She should be undefeated except for an unlucky loss in the Providencia; rebounded nicely with a fast win in the Honeymoon.
7 Consumer Credit – East coast horses are shipping out in droves for the SoCal turf stakes; they smell blood in weak grass divisions.
Long Shot – 5 Sharla Rae
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
7 Bronze Star – Has been conservatively handled by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; cozy parking lot post to clock the early speed.
4 Forest Blue – Was second best behind a very talented colt in Kentuckian; gets class relief in this non-stakes race.
Long Shot – 3 Tried and True
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Dead Easy – Has closed well in all four starts down the hillside turf course; gets reunited with Kent Desormeaux tonight.
5 it Is Living Water – Sight unseen since breaking his maiden at Del Mar; hasn’t been down the hill in a while, but showed ability on it.
Long Shot – 7 Shemp
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles, $200,000 Californian, 3-year-olds and up
7 Moreno – Without his buddy Shared Belief around, he looks like a monster in this spot; was ridden perfectly by Cornelio Velasquez.
8 Catch a Flight – I like it when a horse wins while running a lower Beyer Speed figure; ran third in the Santa Anita Handicap.
Long Shot – 9 Sammy Mandeville
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
11 Seedsandstemsagain – His resume down the hill is OK considering the quality of this group; like the parking lot post too.
12 Pay the Fine – Gets the extreme parking lot post down the hillside turf course; was thought of enough to run in a stakes 2 races ago.
Long Shot – 3 Real Big Deal
Best Bet – 7 Moreno (race 8)
Santa Anita Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$15.60; Long Shots, 8/2/$47.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$2.40
Santa Anita Meet Totals – 282/72/$416.40; Long Shots, 139/23/$301.00; Best Bets, 17/8/$30.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #5 World Approval (6/1) in race 9 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Thatcher Street won at Churchill Downs paying $5.40 to win, $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Stats – 73/49/$361.40; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
