Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, May 29
May 28, 2015 - 11:04 pm
Post Time 4 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 J and S Express – Claimed by Doug O’Neill off a gutsy win last out; like it when horses win while running a slower Beyer speed figure.
3 Shy Rosa – You don’t often see horses win and then get dropped in class; Mike Machowsky is literally shoving this one down our throats.
Long Shot – 4 Where Is My Mind
Race 2 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $65,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds
5 Bolo – After an ill fated run in the Derby, he returns to his preferred surface, turf; he’s a future graded stakes horse.
4 Sky Preacher – Another example of a horse suited to run on grass rather than dirt; still has a good upside for Doug O’Neill.
Long Shot – 2 Royal Albert Hall
Race 3 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Ma’moisele Speaker – You have an edge over me in seeing the tote action; lots of FTS and some from barns that do well with babies.
6 Baby Bea Scattin – Has been prepping at Los Alamitos for Art Sherman; have to like her pedigree by Scat Daddy, one to fear.
Long Shot – 4 Swiss Affair
Race 4 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Sambamzajammin – Her one race was a good second; that experience could be enough to get her over the hump and win this rich purse.
1 Spark Plug Katie – The rail post in these abbreviated sprints can be a real asset; break sharp and you’re already on the far turn.
Long Shot – 6 Ride the Shark
Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $35,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 Ya Ya Girl – Love the parking lot post down the hillside turf course; figures to get a first rate trip under Rafael Bejarano.
4 Katy Drama – The two best finishes of her career came down the hillside turf course; will try and cut the corner under Tyler Baze.
Long Shot – 5 Showcase Winner
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Kristinite – Returns to dirt where her one try was a good second three races back; loses jockey Elvis Trujillo returning to Monmouth.
5 Watdifrenzdzitmake – Tepid chalk slides down the claiming ladder; from the live Philip D’Amato barn, his strike rate is impressive.
Long Shot – 2 Warrens Goldnugget
Race 7 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Jade With Envy – Shook off a long winless streak to win on grass last time; has good tactical speed to grab position early on.
3 Love Blind – Her 8/1 odds offer value on a mare who prefers turf; claimed by Dean Pederson, she is well spotted for a quick ROI.
Long Shot – 7 Prevaricator
Race 8 – 5 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Shallot – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to handle this motley crew.
4 Mudge – Has had a million chances but keeps cashing minor paychecks; with each passing race her foes get easier and easier.
Long Shot – 8 Travel Free
Best Bet – 5 Bolo (race 2)
Santa Anita Monday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$28.60; Long Shots, 9/1/$8.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Meet Totals – 267/68/$400.80; Long Shots, 131/21/$253.20; Best Bets, 16/7/$28.20
