Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, May 14

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Wandering Heart – You rarely see a 1/2 odds morning line in SoCal; says more about her foes than the fact she is that strong.

5 Kiss My Face – Showed good improvement last time in her first race on dirt; she had trained well over it plenty of times.

Long Shot – 3 High Intensity

Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

6 Blind Dreams – Claimed by Michael Pender and spotted nicely to win; slow year so far for the barn, but this is an underrated trainer.

3 Coded Message – David Hofmans adding blinkers on for this; sliding down from $30K to $20K can make for a big difference.

Long Shot – 7 Charlotte R

Race 3 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

7 Esmeralda Belle – Good career debut when second best all the way around the racetrack; key if she improves just one step today.

6 Faith Pacer – FTS from the always tough Jeff Bonde barn; has win early pedigree and should show some early speed.

Long Shot – 1 Princess Pippa

Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $40,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

4 Hawkedon – Second start off the claim by Mike Pupye; ran bang up down the hill in last, is taken to repeat that superb effort.

5 Royal F J – Claimed by Jack Carava who is no dummy; he enters his right back down the hill, a course that he absolutely adores.

Long Shot – 3 Kill Shot

Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Shopping Savannah – Peter Miller has been unlucky of late with a lot more seconds than wins; yet his horses continue to run well.

3 Democracy Rules – Has paired up nice wins for Mike Machowsky; Aaron Gryder still has what it takes to win races in SoCal.

Long Shot – 4 Garnisheed Wages

Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

10 Eddie’s First – Remember the posts are reversed down the hill; meaning the outside is much preferred over the inside stalls.

4 Corinthian’s Song – Hard to believe this horse will go off at 8/1 with the great Rafael Bejarano up; closing from far, far back.

Long Shot – 2 Husband’s Folly

Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Queen of the Hill – Claimed by Peter Miller and spotted well to win; like the rider switch to Tyler Baze who has cooled off a little bit.

4 Blue Blizzard – Trainer Andy Mathis doesn’t start many in SoCal anymore; but when he ships down from NoCal, he’s usually very live.

Long Shot – 8 Norastone

Race 8 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up

6 Native Ride – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Drayden Van Dyke takes over for the money shot.

2 Passinaflash – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this career low level; key vote comes from Rafael Bejarano up.

Long Shot – 4 Miltee

Best Bet – 6 Native Ride (race 8)

Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/4/$16.80; Long Shots, 9/1/$39.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Meet Totals – 183/44/$271.80; Long Shots, 90/14/$178.40; Best Bets, 11/5/$21.00
