TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
3 Ballard Ruler – Exits a solid second in the Cal Cup Juvenile; one step improvement will be enough with these.
4 Lovmeister – Finished right behind Ballard Ruler in the Cal Cup at 25/1 odds; won’t be nearly that price tonight.
Long Shot – 2 Fighting Hussar
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Resisting Arrest – Rafael Bejarano is regaining his mojo after a pitiful Breeders’ Cup; this filly has good tactical speed.
2 Tribal Custom – Ran evenly in debut for Marty Jones; was well bet in debut and solid improvement is expected.
Long Shot – 6 Cleverly Beverly
Race 3 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
1 Prime Number – Been away 10-months; John Sadler has opened this Santa Anita meet white hot.
6 Congregationalist – Speedball has done a few pop and stops so far; might last longer with the turf rail out 10 feet.
Long Shot – 4 Zip Cat
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds
5 Deal’Em – Claimed by Jack Carava and spotted nicely to win first out; like that he hires Rafael Bejarano.
3 Go to the Pulpit – Dead late closer was left with too much to do in last; returns to dirt with a solid resume.
Long Shot – 7 Quiet Command
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Spring Bloom – Second start off a 10-month hiatus; stretches out around 2-turns where a much slower pace will be to her liking.
5 Passionville – Closed fast in last for a solid second; she’s run some better races so is a strong upset possibility.
Long Shot – 2 Letthepartybegin
Race 6 – 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Eaton Hall – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class; speed and the rail, the one to catch.
8 Warren’s Rail Bird – Dead late closer will have a solid pace to close into; like the parking lot post in an elongated sprint.
Long Shot – 7 Priddis Wildcat
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 10 feet), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
7 I Dazzle – How often has Rafael Bejarano ridden for Jack Van Berg; this filly must be live for this combination.
3 Qaraaba – Makes her U.S. debut first time with Lasix; fine 5-of-13 wins in Great Britain.
Long Shot – 5 Silver Hustler
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Jay’s Firetruck – Getting long in the tooth with 10 losing starts; this is a slowpoke race so he may not get caught.
7 Lite That Baby Up – Could be an excellent day for Rafael Bejarano if things work out; tactical speed to sit a trip.
Long Shot – 9 Slew’s Flash
Best Bet – 3 Ballard Ruler (race 1)
Hollywood Park Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/5/$33.00; Long Shots, 9/1/$9.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Park Totals – 69/19/$140.00; Long Shots, 35/2/$17.00; Best Bets, 4/2/$8.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #5 Kid Kate (3/1) in race 3 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
