Horse Racing: Today at Hollywood Park, May 16

TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 2-year-olds

4 Western Showdown – FTS from Rafael Becerra barn; need not be much, watch the tote board for clues.

1 Get Even Girl – Walther Solis has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; natural odds of 40 percent Solis winning this.

Long Shot – 5 Tupelo Cush

Race 2 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $46,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds

1 Laugh At Life – The inside post is a big edge in Inglewood turf sprints; saves all the ground throughout.

6 Limited Response – Career best win in last over Arcadia dirt; now tries grass for the first time, and at short odds.

Long Shot – 2 One Firm Cat

Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $26,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

5 Brooklyn Rose – Claimed by Julio Canani off a runaway win for Bob Hess; if he just maintains, he’ll be tough again.

3 Katy’s Kitty – Bob Hess not happy with blinker’s off experiment; the hood returns for this route race.

Long Shot – 8 J and S Express

Race 4 – 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

8 Willetta – Like the cut back in distance to this elongated sprint; parking lot post is a benefit also.

4 Angel Be Quick – Sprinter stretching out figures to be on the engine from the get go; jock and trainer are winless this meet.

Long Shot – 5 Torre Italiana

Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $54,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

2 Warren’s Flasher – Paired wins, but the last grass verdict was much faster; this may become her preferred surface.

4 Lia Juliana – Steve Knapp is having a solid start to this Inglewood meet; last turf try was a career topper.

Long Shot – 7 Akiss Forarose

Race 6 – 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

4 Magic Maya – Ran evenly in first dirt try; was first race for a price tag too, chance to improve a step tonight.

1 Bas – Beaten favorite was returning off a 6-month hiatus; figures to move forward in second time off the bench.

Long Shot – 9 Frannie’sspirittoo

Race 7 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $54,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

6 Malibu Honey – Looks like a sharp claim by John Sadler; suspect he’ll protect this filly until further notice.

1 Llandudno – John Sadler has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; this one figures to sit in arrears for one run.

Long Shot – 3 Bares Tripper

Race 8 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

3 Tribalista – FTS from Jerry Hollendorfer; I suspect the tote board will show the way.

6 Yodelmesomemagic – Tepid chalk was well bet in career debut; has plenty of room for improvement.

Long Shot – 7 Harlington’s Rose

Best Bet – 1 Laugh At Life (race 2)

Hollywood Park Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/4/$21.20; Long Shots, 9/2/$15.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Hollywood Park Totals – 202/54/$336.20; Long Shots, 94/13/$134.40; Best Bets, 11/3/$8.80

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #1 At Bat (9/5) in race 1 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Cairo Six ran third at Churchill Downs paying $4.80 to show. Stats – 77/53/$393.80; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
