Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, October 29

Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Doyouknowsomething – Trainer A. C. Avila claimed this one for $16K 3 races ago; was aggressively placed in 2 starts, now gets dropped down to face his friends.
4 Exemplar – Sliding down the claiming ladder to the lowest class of his career; I’ve been impressed with the riding of 7-pound apprentice Ty Kennedy.
Long Shot – 1 Vartan
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
1 Pico Chick – Woke up with a nice effort in last when dropped in first time for a price tag; she’ll be double tough if she improves just one step.
4 Amare – Did a classic pop and stop last time out; trainer Philip D’Amato adding blinkers on so expect even more focused heat on the front end.
Long Shot – 6 Swag Moneyh
Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Follow Me Crev – Has good tactical speed which should be very useful with the turf rail out 12 feet; has yet to win though since claimed by trainer Vladimir Cerin.
8 Mister Blue – Has shown a powerful late kick albeit settling for minor awards; this is not a tough group so a strong late run can cash another paycheck.
Long Shot – 7 Sunbeamsfromheaven
Race 4 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
2 Newfound Gold – Was claimed last time out of a winning race, but the claim was voided; trainer Bob Hess enters him right back him where he’s been very consistent.
3 Karma King – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class; was thought of enough to run in the grade 1 Cash Call Futurity another lifetime ago.
Long Shot – 4 Sir Barclay
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $40,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
2 Lovenseek – Solid turf resume with 2 wins and 2 thirds from 4 grass tries; has tactical speed to either lead or sit off of the rail runner Bandido Too.
6 John’s Success – Ran like a short horse in last off a year hiatus; Corey Nakatani remains loyal and that’s good, he is a very skilled grass rider.
Long Shot – 5 Rockin Robin
Race 6 – 7 furlongs, $200,000 Golden State Juvenile, Fillies, 2-year-olds
7 Pacific Heat – Ran like a horse that means business in a successful career debut; surprised that Rafael Bejarano took off, but we’ll go with smokin’ Joe Talamo.
10 Patriotic Diamond – Broke her maiden in the Generous Portion stakes; you’ll see that with talented 2-year-olds because a MSW race might not fill.
Long Shot – 14 Just Google Me
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Salsita – Gets class relief from two stakes races for this O/C; the last time she ran at this level she won for fun 3 races ago.
10 Tiz a Kiss – Rafael Bejarano takes a last shot before flying to Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup; this one will sit in arrears and make one run turning for home.
Long Shot – 8 Show Stealer
Race 8 – 1 mile, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Born to Serve – This one has been more chump than champ in his career; trainer Bill Spawr drops him to the bottom where he will be lone early speed, catch him to win.
5 Alltheleavesrbrown – Made a menacing move in last before flattening out late; trainer Doug O’Neill switches to Rafael Bejarano, can’t blame him for that.
Long Shot – 3 Dirt in Your Face
Best Bet – 2 Salsita (race 7)
Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$26.00; Long Shots, 9/1/$6.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Final Totals – 319/70/$428.40; Long Shots, 162/35/$417.20; Best Bets, 17/4/$14.40
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #5 Clearly Confused (5/1) in race 6 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Madison Blues ran out at Belmont Park. Stats – 159/106/$813.90; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
