Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, July 24

TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2:05 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $75,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Cotton’s Point – Was flattered when Glorious Luck won right back; saves ground, may be her turn tonight.

5 Sophie’s Secret – Her best races have been on synthetics; figures to show speed in a really slow group.

Long Shot – 2 Cravin’ the Heat

Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $38,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds

7 Change of Plan – Sharp win as Mike Pupye had a most excellent Hollywood meet; been cold at Del Mar, may break ice in here.

4 Captain Corrigan – Was left with too much to do last time at Golden Gate; Edwin Maldonado figures to sit closer up.

Long Shot – 6 Hardliner

Race 3 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $75,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

2 Taelyns Prince – Solid debut in a good looking field last out; Jeff Mullins barn has been running well, yet in bad luck.

9 Sunny Kat – Was well bet in debut; must overcome a parking lot post, expect Julien Leparoux to take back off the early pace.

Long Shot – 4 Mr. Cactus

Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up

13 Shediak – Should draw in off the AE list after scratch of Position A; top combo of Rafael Bejarano and Jerry Hollendorfer.

1 Streets of Heaven – Claimed by Jorge Periban off a sharp win; these are his friends at this $8,000 class.

Long Shot – 6 Jim’s No Preacher

Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

1 Tom Kha – This may be the worst race of the meet, so far; key spot in the pick 4, pick 5 and pick 6.

11 – Monstro Ness – Did a classic pop and stop in career debut; Goncalino Almeida still is winless in his brief training career.

Long Shot – 12 Adriatic Lass

Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $80,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Sweet Lulu – Difficult heat with 3 horses capable of being favored; she has speed-miler type pedigree.

1 Ondine – Good third in Hollywood Oaks last time; facing an easier task, Bob Baffert winning races by the bushel.

Long Shot – 4 Bella Viaggia

Race 7 – 1 mile (turf), $90,000 Wickerr, 3-year-olds and up

2 Indy Point – Key for me is Gary Stevens not riding for Tom Proctor; Argentine import first time Lasix for Richard Mandella.

5 Corporate Jungle – Tom Proctor has won both his races this meet with Gary Stevens; Rafael Bejarano is a pretty good sub.

Long Shot – 8 Wilkinson

Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

11 Tuckers Point – Did everything but win last time in a big effort; flattered when Keep Movin won next time out.

1 Indycott – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; his race two back could beat these.

Long Shot – 2 Warren’s Cliff S.

Best Bet – 11 Tuckers Point (race 8)

Del Mar Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/3/$17.00; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.00

Del Mar Totals – 87/23/$177.40; Long Shots, 43/5/$53.40; Best Bets, 5/3/$11.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #2 Tapicat (2/1) in race 9 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Uno Duo won at Saratoga paying $3.00 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats – 120/77/$585.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
