Horse Racing, Del Mar, July 21

Today at Del Mar

Post Time 2:05 p.m.

Race 1 – 1 mile, Purse $73,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up

4 Hoorayforhollywood – Bob Baffert practically wons SoCal racing right now; this is a very even field, but the barn is the edge.

5 Akkadian – Third start off a 8-month hiatus can be his best; switching from turf to synthetics tonight.

Long Shot – 1 Massone

Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

7 Pumpkin Pie – Dead late closer will appreciate the extra ground today; Garrett Gomez will sit in arrears and make one run.

6 Patty’s Pulpit – Been away 4-months, but returns in a very soft spot; Corey Nakatani is riding like a hungry jockey again.

Long Shot – 8 Cash In Hand

Race 3 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), $300,000 Eddie Read, 3-year-olds and up

5 Slim Shadey – Tough task to beat the Cal-bred champ; suspect he can stalk a slow pace and try to to win a fist fight in the lane.

3 Acclamation – The Cal-bred champ figures to be a very short price in here; P Val will put him on the lead and nurse the fractions.

Long Shot – 4 Casino Host

Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $71,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Winding Way – Was super impressive in winning her career debut; sure to be way overbet, she may just be this good.

7 Lanida – Ran well in last returning from a 9-month hiatus; has tactical speed to sit a trip and try to rally in the lane.

Long Shot -4 You Can Dream

Race 5 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $50,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

1 In the Midnight – One of many ship and win horses on the card; draw a line thru his last debacle and his races are fast enough to upset.

6 Yankee Dan – Logical chalk has won 3 straight for Jeff Mullins; his barn is heating up just in time to salvage the season.

Long Shot – 7 Trucial State

Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

10 Den’s Legacy – It’s getting to the point you bet Bob Baffert regardles of what the horse looks like; this one did a pop and stop in debut.

2 Rolling Fog – Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry so keep an eye on this colt too; he wins a lot of races for Arnold Zetcher.

Long Shot – 5 Gabriel Charles

Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

11 Magic Beam – Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; has a parking lot post, but his race at this class two back was a good one.

6 Kumite – Claimed by Hector Palma specifically for this race; this is a wide open scrum but this gelding fits.

Long Shot – 7 Primal Jones

Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), $85,000 Osunitas, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

4 Byrony – Tiny edge in another difficult heat; there is no standout in this evenly matched field.

8 Halo Dotty – Won the 2011 Solana Beach in her lone career start at Del Mar; suspect Jerry Hollendorfer had that in mind.

Long Shot – 6 Hard to Resist

Race 9 – 1 mile, Purse $36,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

8 Adriatic Moon – Mike Mitchell claimed this horse with Del Mar in mind; has won 3-of-4 at Del Mar with one show finish.

4 Cayambe – Flattered in last when Arraignment won next out; third start off a 9-month hiatus could be a resurgence.

Long Shot – 2 Temerity

Race 10 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up

7 Dreamcatcher – Has shown steady improvement in each of 3 career starts; main caveat is speed is doing very well in turf routes.

8 Corinthian’s Song – You might include this one due to his tactical speed; Garrett Gomez won’t have to rally from dead last.

Long Shot – 3 Half Strike

Best Bet – 7 Pumpkin Pie (race 2)

Del Mar Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$27.80; Long Shots, 8/2/$14.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.20

Del Mar Totals – 50/9/$65.20; Long Shots, 26/3/$23.20; Best Bets, 3/1/$4.20

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #2 Shrewd One (5/2) in race 9 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Jackson Bend ran out at Saratoga. Stats – 110/76/$639.90; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
